Protein Advice

Ok, I went to GNC to check out the protein.  I bought a 4.00 bottle of Isopure (it was a grape flavor).  i was so excited to try it because I loved flavored water and I thougth it would be good.  Well, after the torture treatment I had on the treadmill (Stress Test)  I was thirsty.  I thougth I would give it a try.  HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!  It was awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I thought it was me, so I gave it to my hubby.  He rarely turns down any food or drinks.  He took a sip and at first he liked it.  Then he was like, "GROSS, this stuff is nasty...."  He dupmed it out.  We had a good laugh about it. OK, so I went to the Vitamin shop and bought some Muscle Milk protein shakes.  They look like little juice boxes.  They have 20 grams of protein.   The man told me he thought Muscle Milk was the best tasting protein on the market.   I have not tried them yet, but it was the smallest pack I could buy.  They told me if I did not like it I could return it.  Actually told me they would have taken back that dreadfull grape drink. My question is, what is the best protein to get.  Suggestions please.  I want to find one that I like so I have some at home after surgery.  I was told that your taste can change too, great!!!!!!!!!! I also see that a lot of people eat Chicken salad, tuna salad and stuff like that post op.  By chicken salad are they meaning canned chicken with mayo or going to the deli and getting willow tree-(that is my favorite). I want to be prepared.  Any suggestions would be great. Thanks, jen

You won't be able to eat chicken salads etc right away.  You will need to have liquid proteins.  I recommend you start trying them now.  They are not all created equal.  You can buy samples of some from this site... http://www.unjury.com/index.shtml I like the chocolate sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfast... No matter what anyone tells you the unflavored does have a flavor and changes the consistancy of foods.  My recommendation is to try flavors that you don't know what they taste like  (if that even makes sense).  Basically, flavors like wildberry...(what does that taste like??)

Jen,

In the packet I got from Dr. Roye at my appointment they suggested unflavored protein powder such as Designer Whey, Unjury, Genisoy XLT etc.  Also, low carbohydrate, high protein shakes (Myoplex, Isopure, Low Carb Slimfast - as long as it has less than 12 grams of carbs per 8 oz serving.  Protein should be at least 10 grams per 8 oz).   Pam

Hey Jen,

Did you see a nutrionist?  That was one of the appts. I needed before surgery with Dr. Roye.  She explained everything about my eating plan after surgery.  She gave plenty of suggestions and all the do's and don'ts.  I am actually still seeing the nutrionist.  When a nutritionist visited me in the hospital they told me that my insurance pays for 6 visits.  I have been seeing Robbin Joseph at RI hospital.  I space the visits so they last. My protein drink of choice is the low carb slim fast.   Nancy

I did pay to see a Nut. before approval.  She went over a lot of what to do before surgery so i would go in healthy.  She said Dr. Roye would give me an idea on what to eat after.  I am just trying to try things before to see if I like them.  Unfortunatly, my insurance will not pay for Nut. appointments.  That is why I had to pay.  I got some soups today and I have been looking at a lot of Sugar Free stuff.  I have heard that a lot of people love tom. soup but can't eat it because of the natural sugars.  I found a packaged one today that you mix w/ water and it only has 5 grams of sugar as opposed to the 30 grams in the campbells.  I will pass the name on later, I cant remember it now. I will try the low Carb slim fast.  I have heard the Atkins ones were good too. Jen

Dear Jen, I'm going to let you in on the dirty little secret of protein drinks.  They're all lousy!  I rate them now as bareable & yuck.  I don't find the Isopure so bad - it's bareable.  After all the chalky drinks, it's a welcome relief. So much for personal taste. So for the chalky drinks - you buy Choc. & vanilla, then you doctor them up.  For emergencies when I just don't have the "doctoring" energy, I have some canned drinks that I also picked up at GNC.  The best is banana cream, but it still rates as only slightly above bareable. I also bought some protein puddings.  Same ratings. Whenever I go into Marshall's or TJ Maxx, I head to the kitchen stuff.  Look for the syrups & then the no-sugar ones.  Buy 'em.  This is my main doctorin' source.  This a.m. I used vanilla chalk (oops, I mean protein powder), & about 4 oz. of frozen cherries - love 'em.  I added syrups of white chocolate & amaretto.  I went to add soy milk (regular milk & I don't always get along) & Huzzah! Chocolate soy milk.  Buzzed them up with a tray of ice & yum!!! Now this I actually rate as good.  I'm still playing around with syrup amounts. I also bought some canned chili.  I bought a new one  & should have stuck with an old fav. It's bareable - barely. In the grocery store try the organic section.  But I had regular tomato soup that comes in a box - yum with a few extra herbs & salty & pepper. I mixed it with with a a vegetable protein powder (not soy). Oh, in GNC go for the calcium bite - they're like caramels & wrapped.  Good!  They also have powered vitamins - strawberry.  Again, a shake that is bareable. Just tell them at GNC that you're having bariatric surgery.  They've heard it before & will offer suggestions. Islander Eileen

Thanks Eileen, how are you feeling anyway.  Anything new to report.  When do you go back to the Dr.?  I love the GNC Calcium Chews.  think they might be upsetting my stomach though.  Thanks for the protein advice.  I will get some of the syrups. Take care, Jen

Jen,  I feel really good!  My midsection is just about healed with little bruising left.  I'm tired & my midsection sometimes aches if I'm up too long. Thanks for askin! I go back to the surgeon Oct. 16.  Then maybe I'll get some big-girl food (although I've had a little like fish). Eileen
