I went to the NUT yesterday and she looked at my bloodwork, my history and the fact that I have PCOS and said that I am most likely Insulin Resistant. Does anyone on the board have this and if so, has it had any effect on the surgery process? I've called my PCP today and hes going to line up the tests to verify it and has mentioned I might need to go onto Metformin.  Id just like to know if its going to effect the entire process since its a new diagnosis.

Hi Angela, Being insulin resistant actually counts as a co-morbidity for WLS.  It's like the training wheels for diabetes is how my PCP explained it.  I was considered a light weight for the surgery @ 263lbs but I had high blood pressure, was insulin resistant, PCOS and my kidney function was dropping due to my blood pressure and a mass in my right kidney.  I had no problems with my approval from Blue Cross - Healthmate (RI) .  I had my approval w/i 4 days of my first appointment w/Dr Roye. Good luck!

Thanks! I actually had blood drawn this morning to find out more as well as some other tests my doctor wanted due to the PCOS. I have an appointment being made with the Endocrinologist to find out if I have to take Metformin. Hopefully I'll know more soon.
