What do you say?

I have had a pretty frustrating week dealing with friends, family and acquiantances comments on my progress.   What do you say when someone says to you:

"I thought you would have lost more weight my now!"     or

"You  can tell you lost weight in your hips, but it makes your thighs look bigger!"    or

" My brother had the same procedure as you and he is twice the size he was now!" I am not dealing with the comments well.  It is making me want to stay home until I am at goal.  I was feeling so proud.  I have lost approx. 35 lbs in just 8 weeks and I haven't been filled yet. I thought  I was looking good I am down almost 2 sizes. Any thoughts?

Nancy,     I'm sorry your success isn't enough for others to be happy about, but I am ecstatic for you! 35 lbs in 8 weeks w/o restriction is AWESOME!! There are many people who just don't know or understand what WLS is all about, even if they know someone else who has had it. Any time you need a little boost, you come here and talk to us, we'll cheer you right up!!  Patty

Ya know I don't know why people feel the need to say stuff like that .. can't they just say " you look great" or " keep up the good work ".. you don't need to hear about somones family member who didn't use the " tool" right .. I havne't had surgery yet .. but a few people know (not by my choice) and it's almost like they are watching what I am eating now .. I can only imagine how they will watch me after ... If someone doesn't having anything nice to say then I feel they shouldn't say anyhting at all .. ~Kelly .. hang in there you're doing great!

Nancy,    You should be proud of yourself, no matter what anyone says. Having had your surgery in April and down 35 lbs is spectacular! People just don't get it... rude as hell they are! I agree with Kelly and you should tell them the same "If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all!" and to me, thats putting it rather nicely. I would not be saying it that way... I'de be saying "Until you've walked in my shoes, shut your mouth!" Do you live with these people??

You ignore them because they are being mean and jealous.  You need to have faith in your accomplishments.  35 lbs. in 8 weeks is phenomenal.  I'm jealous too but I won't be mean.  I'll be hopeful for my own success. You keep up the good work and tell people to please not discourage you and if they have nothing good to say - say nothing at all.

Hi Nancy, I am sorry hear that you have to deal with this sort of thing.   I agree that you should just do your best to ignore this poor "MISGUIDED PEOPLE".    I swear that some people have absolutely no idea what comes out of there mouths.  If you feel that you must respond just tell them that your body will lose at a weight that is appropriate for YOU.   You could also point out that no two people will have the sames result from the moment of the operation on from recovery time to pain management and including weight loss.  Tell them you are happy and that is all that really matters to you. All the best,  Paula
