Hi, and question about 'faux" approval!!!
HI!! I was recently approved for my RNY. I see Dr Roy.. I have heard (I think I read it on this board?) that someone did in fact get an approval, went through all the pre op testing, and then ended up not getting approved due to some "lost paperwork" or something? I dont remember what the whole story was.... does this happen often? I am worried, because my approval packet did come in the mail pretty fast... way less than a month.... so I am just curious just how many people this happens to?
Also, when and where are the meetings? Are they monthly? would really like to go to one... So far, I have had my u/s of gallbladder, chest xray, ekg, I have the psych eval this week, and everything else is scheduled.... so I am hoping for a summer surgery date... It is really nice to be able to chat with people from RI on here!!!

Hello,
So don't worry. I got my packet fast too with all the appointments. I'm done except for the ENDLESS sleep testing.
There are monthly meetings. Here is the link for gastric support: http://www.lifespan.org/services/support/prov.htm
Here is another one:

This page also contains the topics. You can call for the time/place with directions. I went last month & it was a waste. They spent the entire time discussing/arguing about their new format.
One of the posts is about the meeting coming up - Tues? Wed.?

Taa, The meetings are the first wednesday of the month. Next meeting is tomorrow at 6:30 at Gerry House near the hospital. You can get the information on the hospital web site. My approval was fast also. Was told 2-3 weeks to get approved and it ended up being less than a week. When is your next appointment with Dr. Roye to get you surgery date. I was scheduled for surgery about three weeks from that appointment.

great.... I have my psych eval today, I am actually in the middle of the two appts now!!! All my testing has either been done, or all scheduled in may, with the exception of the sleep study.which now I understand is the looooongest process???? lol That is scheduled for June 15... thats the INITIAL one.... so do you think it might be possible to get a surgery date within this summer???? Like, how long does that whole sleep process take? ( I am assuming I have apnea, unrefreshed sleep, loud snoring, etc)
One more thing, the meeting tomorrow, is it appropriate/helpful for pre ops to go?
Thanks again!!!
Reminding me of the sleep study process is getting me upset all over again. This is a boon for the centers & a real minus for my insurance co. This surgery is a cure for sleep apnea. So what's the fuss all about?
First you make your initial appt. (took me almost two mos.) Then you speak w/nurse practioner. One ALWAYS needs the follow-up studies. So why don't they just schedule this initially??
You will get 3 dates (goodbye to another 1 1/2 mos.). Two are for sleeping in a center. This could actually turn out to be only one. But it matters little. You still need to go for the third appointment (with the Dr. to review results). 80% of those overweight have some degree of apnea.
Now here it gets a little fuzzy for me as I'm still going through it. If you have apnea you get a machine - C-PAP. If you don't, you still have the 3rd appt., I think. Perhaps there is even extra time involved to see if the CRAP, oops, I mean C-PAP is working well for you.
THEN, you call the Dr. & get an appointment (another 1 1/2mos.) If that goes well you get a surgery date - 3 wks.
Hope this has given you some info. This whole sleep thing could and should be handled much better and I will complain when I finally get to see Dr. Ryder (if I live that long), At some point I'm just going to nicely inform her office that my only reliable help after surgery is my high schooler who will be home this summer but busy & off to college come late August.
As you can tell, this was not a good day. I called up the sleep ctr. to check on any cancelletions & was told that I had just missed one by ONE minute. GRRRR.
Yours, Eileen
