Has anyone with an underactive thyroid experienced this after BI PASS SURGERY
Hey Linda,
That happened to me, and I was watching a special that aired back in January a few days ago (I'm kinda behind in viewing tapes). It was called Resolutions, one of the people on it had had by-pass surgery. She had intense testing of her thyroid over a year later because she just couldn't lose after her initial 100lbs, come to find out she had an incredibly slow thyroid and the by-pass only made it worse. Hope this isn't true for me.
I'm curious to know if you posted on the main board and what you may have heard.
Pam
Hi Pam-
Some people have TSH Levels as high(which means low thyroid) as 200 or more. There is medication to bring the levels to normal. If you do suspect you have low thyroid just ask your doctor for a" thyroid profile" . A thyroid profile will give you the grand scope of things such as other factors regarding the TSH not just a TSH test. In a nut shell it will give the more info to more info. Go to an endoscopist ( I hope I am saying it right) a specialist that just does a focus on thyroid.
Also since I have posted this I have had my thyroid medicine adjusted to what i feel is good.I went to the Drs on Saturday and got more meds. After all there is not precious time to waste. This is not a good time for my thyroid to slow down. I am at the prime time for losing. I wasn't not going to act on it right away.
I spoke to my surgeon- Dr Roye and he said it happens sometimes because the absorption factor. We sometimes just need more thyroid medicine like we need more vitamins for absorprion purposes.
I initially had to lose only about 75 pounds. I have lost 38. so I am at the half way mark ten weeks post -op.
I persoanlly have had my first blood test 4 weeks after surgery and then again last week. How anyone would go a full year without a blood test is nuts. This surgery was too drastic to leave any kind of imbalances to chance.
