okay- I just had surgery 1 week ago. My nurtitionist says 600-800 calories is good and about 50 grams of protein- what are too many carbs? can the 25 grams of carbs be hurting my weight loss? 1 can of vegitable soup has 25 grams of carbs- is this too much carbs for one day?

Hi Linda, I'm not really sure about the carbs thing, however I am kinda concerned that you are considering soup only being one week out from surgery. You shouldn't be having anything solid for a good amount of time, and I'm not even sure if it's too early to be having blended stuff just yet. However, when you're looking at labels, focus on the amount of protien per serving. There's not a lot of protien in vegetable soup, and soup has stuff in it that takes up unecessary room in your tiny pouch, like pasta, or rice, or barley even when you blend it. If you want the flavor of soup, try having a broth, or thin out one of the creamed soups so that you're getting your fluid in. You can add some unflavored protien powder to those so that you get a little more bang for your buck protien-wise. You also want to pay close attention to how much salt/sodium and sugar is in the soup. Hope that helped a little. Congrats on your surgery! Pam

Hi Linda, Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I'm kinda surprised you're not getting more feedback from the board. I'm a little disappointed in the RI board the past few months. You might want to also check out the main board, you'll get tons of responses really quickly from people all over the US. Anyway, the first couple of weeks you really need to focus on your fluids. You're body just went through major surgery and the anesthesia really does a number on your system. It's easy to get dehydrated when your new tiny pouch is a little swollen right now and it's tough to get all your fluids in. As far as I can remember, for the first three months you can only put in your mouth only whatever can pass through a straw. You should have a packet from your pre-op teaching class that should have all your choices and a suggested menu. A really helpful book, that I still use, is Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies. I got it from Amazon.com, but I also heard you can get it at Borders. Who did your surgery? I'm also curious about your nutritionist. Sue Manchester is agreat resource. I can get you her number and email, but you may already know who she is. Let me know if you are still feeling confused. I'm glad to help if I can. Pam
