psych consult

Hi all. I am new, my name is Janet and I am looking to have the band done. I went to Dr Pohl's seminar last night and made all of my pre-op appts today. I am really nervous about the psych consult. I am an emoional eater and am currently being treated for depression with my own psychiatrist, who unfortunatley doesn't evaluate for surgery!! Anyway, I was wonderig if anyone can give me some info regarding the consult. I am really nervous and don't know what to expect. TIA

Hi Tia and welcome, The psych consult is an all day event. You will initially be asked for fill out a questionare before the appointment, and will fill out another very simailar the day of your appointment. This questionare asks a lot of questions like..have you thought about hurting yourself within the past week, month year....have you thought about hurting someone else wtihin the past week, month year. The questions are asked several different ways several different times and again - you will basically be filling it out twice. The next part of the eval is a meeting where you participate in a narative. They start by asking some questions and then you end up telling the story of your life. They end with more questions and then send you home with another questionare. About two hours later they had me go back where you actually meet with the psychiatrist. They ask you some questions about your narrative and the questionare and then ask specific questions about why you eat, how you eat and what you eat. they ask why you think this will work and what else have you tried and what makes this different. I was exhausted by the time I left and frankly couldn't tell if they were going to clear me or not. I was, but my uncle was not. They made him go through 6 months of weigh****chers to prove he was going to work at losing weight before they cleared him. Good luck and let us know how you make out!! Danielle
