Hello everybody and Merry Christmas. I just wanted to give a quick surgery update. I am one weeek post op and feeling good. Tuesday 12/12 I had an open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass at RI Hospital by Dr. Roye. I was discharged home Friday night. The hospital stay and Dr. Roye were both excellent. The only complications I had was related to my foley catheter insertion (ouch). Due to this I had to be discharged with the catheter still in place. I am not having any problems with the liquified puree diet and my energy level is slowly increasing. I am a little confused about what I am feeling with my pouch and I don't really know what full feels like but I am sure I will figure it out. I will post more on my page as time goes on. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. Michael

RNY on 11/02/15
Hi Michael, Glad to hear overall you are feeling great. sorry about your setback, but at least you are on your way!! What a great xmas present. I can't help you with advise about the RNY because I had the band with good 'ol Dr Roye (whom I love...he is a great surgeon and great guy) but I wanted to wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery!! Happy Holidays to you!~! Kristen D

hi there! congrats on your sucessful recovery! well, mostly, anyway. catheter's are never fun - and they seem even worse for the men.. eek. it just dawned on me that I think we were sitting a seat away from each other at the last meeting. I don't know why I didn't make the connection when you said your name - but i did when i saw your post! so sorry about that! if you need anything, feel free to shoot me an email or post whatever. I still have two perfectly good jugs of protein powder if you want 'em. LOL Kristen*

Hi Kristin, I think you are correct, I was sitting one seat away from you. How are you doing? I am pretty happy the foley cath came out today and I will see Dr. Roye tomorrow and hopefully get my JP drain out. I am happy with the way things have gone so far but I am a little confused telling when I feel full. I eat and then burp, fun fun. Did you have the band or the Roux en Y bypass? If you had the same surgery did you have any confusion about what full felt like at the beginning? Have a great Christmas. Michael

hi there. i'm doing great - no complaints!! i had open RNY - same as you. the full feeling can be difficult for some people to figure out. at first, i measured out exactly what i was supposed to be eating - so i'd never eat too much. if i didn't fini**** oh well. but at least i wasn't going overboard. for me, i seemed to notice that full feeling right in the top of my belly, near the V of my ribcage, if that makes sense. On top of that, I usually have to hiccup once. Once that hiccup occurs, i know i'm done. I know it sounds weird, but it hasn't failed me yet! If I keep going after the hiccup [which i've done.. regretably!] that's when i get that "oh god, i just ate the entire 12 course Thanksgiving meal for 10 people" feeling. No one wants that. LOL It takes some time to get used to your body's new signals - so stick to what you know you should be doing. measure EVERYTHING. this helps you from over eating, but will also help you learn to judge your portion size for the rest of your life. Especially when it comes time for the holidays and buffet/family style dinner's are plentiful. Knowing how much 2oz equals is an invaluable eating tool that i can't encourage people to learn enough! good luck!! kristen*
