problems 2nd day
Well I had my surgery on Wednesday, came home that day. Thursday not too bad I was taking the pain medication every 3-5 hours then Thursday night I got very sick I felt like I was going to vomit and that made me very anxious, so I stopped taking the pain medication and went on ice cubes , the nausea finally subsided but I am still not right, If any one has any suggestions I would be very gratful, remember i am only 3 days out. Please write if you remember any thing from that time that could help!!!
Hi Mary,
First, I'm so sorry you're not feeling well. Before I get too worried, what type of surgery did you have? Was is lap band? I've never heard of anyone being sent home the day of their surgery! I can't even imagine they'd do that with a lap.
It's not unusual at all that the pain medication will make you sick. Just the fact that they've messed around with your tummy can cause most people to have several days, if not more, of nausea and or vomitting. The fact that you said it subsided some when you cut back on the med and tried ice cubes sounds like the med and fluid intake may have been a big part of the problem. You have to go super slow at the beginning and take small sips of fluid, like an ounce in 30 minutes or more. Have you tried sipping any of the protien shakes? Sometimes having something in your stomach besides clear fluids can help with the medication irritation, the consistency and substance of the shake can coat the stomach lining.
To ease your mind, call the on-call doctor. Don't ever, ever feel like your bothering them, or that whatever you are feeling is "just nothing". Just because it's the weekend doesn't mean that you put yourself on hold. They're the experts and can help you through this very difficult first few days and weeks.
How are you feeling today? Even if you're feeling a bit better, it wouldn't hurt to give a quick call in and let them know what's been going on. It benefits them as well to document patients experiences and concerns.
I look forward to hearing how you're doing. It does get better, I promise. I'm four months out as of last Monday.

Hi Mary,
I had the lap band and was supposed to stay 1nt, but they kept me for 2 because of my blood pressure. I didn't think they sent you home the same day..they usually keep you 24hrs so they can monitor you and see how you do with liquids. Call your doctor or the doctor on call and get something for nausea. They can prescribe something for you to feel better. I had anti-nausea meds while in the hospital but came home and didn't need anything. Keep up your fluid intake as much as possible. If you don't, you will get dehydrated...very important in this stage because of the healing and anesthesia. sugar free popsicles were (and still are) my friend. Walking is a great idea because it will help get things moving and keep gas from building up. It is hard at first to do the liquids because your insides are healing...but please call for anti nausea meds...you will be doing yourself a HUGE favor!!
Good luck and keep us posted...i promise it will get better...i am 4 weeks post op and feeling great!!

so glad to hear you are doing better. Let me tell you, the first few days were horrible!! Stay strong because the clear liquid stage is tough once you are feeling better. I was on clears for 10 days. My doc usually does 2 weeks, but thank goodness my follow up fell 10 days after surgery. Just to have a protein shake or cream soup, anything but chicken broth, water, etc....Hang tough...it will get so much easier and you will feel better and better with each passing day
Hey Mary,
Doing great...DYING for my fill...starting to get my appetite back and totally scared. My scale has not budged since the liquid phase (I know it is totally normal but I am so ready to lose more!!). I bet you are looking forward to Monday huh? Who did your surgery?? Have you been on clear liquids this entire time or did they tell you you could have full liquids. Every doctor is different when it comes to post op dieting. when I went to my post op he skipped me right over full liquids and told me I could start mushies...boy was I excited. Have you lost any weight yet?? I need to get my butt out of bed in the morning to start exercising. that is my biggest down fall (besides snacking that got me into this in the first place...lol). Keep busy for the next week and it will fly by so you can get to that appointment!!! I know I said this before, but keep me updated....

Kristen, Good Morning. I guess no one ever said it was going to be easy. I've lost 10 my doc is Roye. I am on clear liquids, and have just started to become hungrey, I think that the process at time makes me anxious, maybe its the hunger,or the fact that I'm bored. I am going to see a dietian tomorrow the same one who did my pre-op eval, maybe I'll get some advise from her it can't hurt. Of course I will continue to follow Dr. Roye diet ,until I speak with him.
It may be boredom of intake...I would have been fine on full liquids like protein shakes, cream soups..I was just sick of broth...If you are looking for a good protein drink I got the EAS 100% whey at Wal-mart. I mix with 1% milk and to tell you the truth it is not bad at all. How did you make out at the nutritionist?? I went for my post-op nutrition visit and she went over everything again and just said...call me if you need me...weird huh?? I figured she would have followed me at least a few times or once a month until I was back on real foods...but whatever!! I take a lot of advise from the lapband board on here....the fellow bandsters give great tips and advise.
How did you like Dr Roye?? He is so professional....nice, but not overly friendly..just his personality...I do like him a lot because he does not sugar coat things...he means business!! So yay...Monday he will probably put you on mushies!!! I was so excited the day I came home from work (had my appt and went back to work after) I could't wait to have mashed pototoes!!! funny...good luck on monday...let me know how you make out!!
