DR. ROYE'S PATIENTS...

Hi all you "losers"! As you all know, my day is coming up soon and I was wondering if you have any suggestions on what to do before leaving hospital? For instance, do they give you a list of vitamins they want you to take? Is there any scrips for any medication that you need to take? Do they instruct you???? In reading some of the posts here, it seems everyone is doing something different and from reading so many posts I am sooooooooo confused. I guess I'm getting a bit nervous and just want to make sure I get all my info straight. It seems that everytime I pick up something at the store for the "post-op" I always think I'm missing something else....you know, you think you're done when you're really not even close???lol I'm getting this feeling a lot. Anyway, I bought myself a comfy sweatsuit for going home. It's soft and looooooose. lol I also bought a pair of non-see-through pj's w/button down shirt so they can do their thing and I can wear it instead of that nighty that they supply. I bought chapstick lol... I've bought different vitamins, some samples of protein drinks (still need to buy a big bucket of tasteless whey), oh, and I even bought some chewable tylenol that I just found at Stop & Shop (buy one get one) lol (just in case). I've bought very small plastic containers (baby size) and a set of baby spoons. I know, I'm just going crazy lol Oh well, I'm mumbling again lol But again, if you do have any info. on things needed before leaving hospital I'd appreciate it. (the only reason I ask is because at one of the meetings, one of Dr. Roye's patients said no one told her about vitamin suppliments or something that she was supposed to get before leaving hospital???) Thanks. L The race is on

Hi, One thing they did fail to give me when I left the hospital was a script for Actigall. They are supposed to give it to you at discharge. Dr.Roye wasn't too happy that I'd gone over a week without it. It's to protect the gall bladder. He also wrote a script for omeprazole, aka prilosec. I think they were supposed to give me that at discharge too. If he ends up removing the gall bladder during your surgery then it's a moot point. I brought my cell phone and a CD player, didn't spend a lot of time using them because you're in and out in couple days. I slept most of the first day, then got to walking and went home later in the afternoon of the next day, so I guess a total of 2.5 days. Have you had your pre-op class yet? That's really helpful! They give you lots of handouts, a shopping list, meal plans and everything. You'll need to get some calcium citrate. I bought these yummy new chewable kind at Walmart by Citrical, they're called Creamy Bites and they come in lemon, caramel and chocolate. Of course you can always get the lozenges at Vitalady.com, or smartforme.com, or bariatricadvantage.com, or several other websites. They give you those websites and several phone numbers and emails at the pre-op class. The lozenges are good because it's like sucking on a mint or cinnamon disk, they don't fill you up. I don't know about anyone else, but I love Jay Robb's Unflavored Whey Protien. It's absolutely tasteless and I put it in EVERYTHING. I picked it up at Whole Foods Market, but they have a website too JayRobb.com, I've never checked it out. Don't go too crazy buying a lot of stuff though, because you may find that you like a particular type of protien drink and then you'll be stuck with a bunch of some kind that you might not like as well. Kristen said that the website wlssupplies.com is really great because you can try lots of samples and they come in a little jug that you just add water to. Vitalady also has sample sizes, but they don't come in mixing jug. But she has some neat items like sugar free syrups and things. Hope that was helpful, albeit a bit long. Pam

Make sure your vitamins are chewable...Flintstones what ever chewable you can find. I had rny and dr harrington told me to take 2 a day. I now take a regular vitamin along with several others that I chose to take because of my hair falling out. Dont buy too much as you may never use some if it once you can eat. I have baby food and an entire jar of chocolate protein. I bought three when right before I went in for surgery. It take a long time to go thru one of these plastic jugs. The nurses there like you to wear the gown because its easier for them. In fact, I could not wear anything but the hospital gown. I did buy the liquid adult tylenlol and used it. It does help when you need it for pain. I didnt know there was an adult chewable one on the market. Please dont get nervous ....just bring your yourself and maybe a toothbrush. The hospital will provide everything else including slipper sox which they want you to wear. The dont want you to wear anything else.. I put my powdered protein in with slim fast and a little vanilla (also a banana) and its delicious. It does fill you up. Good luck..you will be just fine Carol b

hey there. the race is definitely on! 1. don't bother bringing pj's to the hospital - you won't wear them. johnnies are great, not only because the tie on, but because the arms are buttoned. this makes for easy removal when you have IVs in. Tie a string to a door, hold it - now try to change out of the clothes you're in and put new pj's on - it wn't happen. lol 2. the pre op teaching class will tell you everything. you will need to get a presciption for fragmin [or another blood thinner] before surgery. after surgery is different for everyone. but i think most people leave with a prevacid type medicine. i left with some high dose antibiotics. the teaching class will give you all the vitamins you need [chewable multi-v, calcium being the most imp.] 3. definitely go the protein sample route before buying a big tub of anthing. i have 2 nearly fully tubs taking up valuable space on my countertops, still. 4. as far as the woman not knowing she needed vitamins - i think that's ridiculous. i highly doubt Kelly, the nurse who runs the pre-op teaching class would forget that. if anything, the woman didn't pay attention! it's written all over the place, in all the handouts and all over any kind of literature related to this surgery. i swear, some people are just too ignorant to have this surgery! [/end rant] you are going to be well prepared - we all know it! it feels like a crazy rush to get there, but once you're at the hospital everything slows and you'll flow through with flying colors. have a good one!!! kristen*

Hey Elaine! Hugzzzies You know, it's funny you say that. I went out a while ago and bought myself a pill crusher at brooks for $6 and change. Kind of steep but hey, I needed it right? lol Well, come to find out, the Dollar Tree has the same exact one and pill cutters and pill boxes all for a buck. Grrrrr... I have to find the receipt for the brooks one and return it...lol It pays to shop around! L
