Post-op time...
Hi everybody,
So my surgery was on tuesday and everything went very well. Dr.Garneau said that it was actually one of his "easiest" surgeries, so I was happy to hear that.
I was anxious to hear from him if my liver had shrunk enough with the Optifast and he said that I did a very good job with it. It's reassuring to hear especially having done it throughout the holidays. My total weight loss pre-op was 23 lbs.
Truth be told...waking up post-op was not fun. The realization that the surgery was done and the ensuing pain brought it home. No going back...but I knew that it was the right thing to do for me and that the next few days were going to be tough.
So I was in the hospital 24 hours and then home with my prescriptions and follow-up appointment.
First few days are hard...not going to lie about it. The gas...trying to get up out of a chair or bed. Trying to drink and managing just a few sips since the pain is not allowing you to drink more.
But working through it. Took my Gas-X strips for the first time today and I hope it will help. For anyone that is interested...don't expect any bowel movement for a while...nothing since Monday. For those of you who are way further along than I am...how long will this go on about (no bowel movement)? I know that I'm not eating but still is odd not going.
Trying to stay hydrated and getting this darned gas out!! Slowly but surely.
Anyway that's it for now...sorry it was such a long post...
Hugs to all,
Ada xoxoxo
Hi Ada,
I am so happy to hear that your surgery went well and that you're doing fine.
Don't hesitate to use the Gas-X strips, they were a life saver for me - really, really helped with the gaz. Also, don't be skimpy with the pain killers - if it hurts and you're within the prescripted limits, take it! Pain control is a very important part of the recovery process.
I don't remember how long I went without a BM but I remember that when they came back, they would be few and far between - maybe once every 3 days. That lasted for about 2 months. So, don't worry, this too shall pass .
Take care and keep us posted!
Monica

Hi Ada!
This DSer can't give you much advice about VSG but is very happy that your surgery went so well and wishes you a speedy recovery!
I'm with Monica on pain control; within prescribed limits, use those pain killers. If pain still bothers you, give your surgeon a call!
Moderate exercise can promote bowel movement and gas elimation. Try to walk within your limits...
Take care

Hi Ada,
So happy to hear that it went well.
BM are not regular for me even now. I do remember that after a couple of weeks of eating food it got better much more regular. But then it got worse again. Now it's only every couple of days at best for me. But I hope that's not the case for you. :)
Definetly I agree sip and walk as much as possible. Every little step will help :)
I think as each day passes it gets easier and easier... the hard part is over now.
Keeps us posted on your progress.
Hugs to you
Cindy

Hey Ada!!
Congratulations, you're on the other side of the fence now. Congratulations and take it easy :) You're post was super helpful too because I've heard such mixed reviews on what to expect after. Its nice to hear an honest story from someone who's on the same jouney. Keep us posted on your progress!
Sincerely,
Omar
