Complication from the surgery....
I was wondering if I should post it or not, I don't want to discourage anyone about surgery, but I decided to post, because I think everyone needs to be informed of what can happen.
My husband had is surgery on nov the 25, and since then, he had nausea and vomiting... He wasn't able to eat or drink at all without vomiting, even with gravol, or other anti nausea medications. He ended in the emergency room monday morning, severely dehydrated. He is still in the hospital, with IV fluids, and anti nausea medications, but still vomit when he try to eat some puree food. For the first time today ( 3 weeks out) he was able to keep broth and jello! The doctor told him that it happens sometimes, when they cut the stomach that they touch a nerve that can give nausea. Good news, it will go away... Bad news, it can take up to 6 months to be ok...And he has to have other test because they think that with all the vomiting, the stomach twisted on itself, and that blocks the solid from going down. The dr said it happens 1 out of 300 surgeries! They will check it with a gastroscopy, and will see if he'll need another surgery to correct that or if it will correct itself with time...
Despite all of this, my husband was quite happy with his weight loss ( 50 pounds including the pre-op) but he weighted himself today at the hospital and had regain 12 pounds with all the iv...But he's feeling much better than monday , he was so weak, he had difficulty standing up...
I'll keep you posted on how it will turn out...
And like you Brenda, my xmas tree is not up yet, not sure if I want to do one, but like my kid said: where will we put the gifts if there is no tree??

Hi Diane,
This is just a minor speed bump in your husbands recovery road. It's really unfortunate but I read it is somewhat more common than we thought. In no way is this going to discourage me from wanting surgery. Like you said, with it he was able to lose about 50 pounds and that's already and amazing achievement in itself. I'll be thinking of him in the next couple of days but please do keep us updated on his progress.

Hi Diane,
I'm glad you posted because we need to know the pros and the cons with everything in life. I'm just very sorry it had to happen to your husband. I hope he feels better very soon and the fact that he has lost 50 lbs. is very encouraging. You had your own speed bump at the beginning and look at you now skinny girl
Wishing him a very speedy recovery!
As most of you (it seems) I don't have my tree up yet...but what I'll do is pull out my "tiny" tree, a really small version of the big one and the presents will go under that.
Hope you all have a wonderful week-end!
Ada

Thanks for your good thoughts. Sylvain got back home today, but he has to go back to the hospital monday morning for another stomach test, and he will see dr Denis on thursday. He is still nauseus and unable to eat, he just take ice, pops and broth. Next week will be very busy with the appointments and Christmas preparation... But I don't think I'll have to prepare too much food for the party!
Diane, I am glad you posted also. I have been wondering how it has been going for your husband. Not quite the news I was hoping to hear but like everyone else I wish him a speedy recovery. I am sure you'll figure something out for the tree. I decided tonight is the night I am putting mine up. It will be a simpler version but I decided that despite the dust and mesh, there will be a corner where it will look like xmas! Now I need to find time to wrap presents. LOL . PS. Your husband is very lucky to have you.
