Finally Made it to my Consult
Hey everyone :),
My consult was yesterday, with Dr.Atlas. Finally I was able to go and see the clinic and meet the Drs and nurses first hand which really made it all seem real.
As I had hoped, I was not only approved for surgery but also put in the day surgery program to have my surgery done at the Rockland Medical center. Dr. Atlas said my wait would be in the ball park of fourteen months, with a of maximum eighteen months.
I was nervous that he might be a little mean like some doctors can be, but he was so polite and respectful. I actually brought my mom with me, and he directed most of the conversation to her because ofcourse I knew what he was talking about thanks to all of you. She did have a lot of questions and he took his time to answer all of them.
He recommended the VSG for me, as opposed to the lap band, and said in the worst case scenario a revision could be done to RNY, but I really do hope that the VSG will be enough.
Although I dreamed, as im sure many have, that I would get a super short wait and that I would be in an out in no time. I am really happy with how this is all going, I think the wait is very decent and I can really use the time to try to get healthy and prepare myself... and even pig out on the all the stuff I know that I probably won't be able to have in the same quantity (haha some things don't change).
Now for the questions: He took my referral and all the info and said that I would be put on the waiting list, and that some one would call me to confirm. Then he said I would be called six month prior to surgery to be given a date, then 4-5 weeks prior to begin Optifast.
Since most of you have done this before, when should I expect the first call? The confirmation that I am officially in line. Plus I notice a lot of you call the hospital to see who they are call and when? Is there a number I can call from time to time inorder to find out where I stand in the line?
Finally I have to say that I might be moving to Calgary for a short while to do some university courses there. Its only a three hour, and relatively cheap plane ride, to get there and back and can happen within a day. But I'll probably lhave them call my family or a family friends, so i can fly back in for my pre-op and eventually optifast and surgery. My insurance has to be renewed in April of 2012. By my calculation, I should already have had my surgery. But in the odd case I can't get my insurance renewed in time I'm wondering if they will perform my surgery regardless since I'm already on the list.
The move to calgary is a very temporary kind of situation, and Its still in its baby stages so I have no clue if and when its happening except probably some time in the latter half of 2011. But if you guys know anything about what may or may not happen with insurance. Please let me know.
Ive been really busy with university so I haven't been on the board much but hopefully it all changes soon.

I can't really say how many months before surgery because I still don't have my date but here is what happened for me.
April 28th, 2009 - First consult with Dr. Garneau
May 21st, 2009 - Received a call from Hopital du Sacré-Coeur de Montreal to say I was on the list
May 28th, 2009 - Received a letter from them confirming I was on the list
September 2010 - Received a call saying that they would be calling me to book a nut visit, blood work and a final meeting with the nurse.
September 11th, 2010 - Called to book my appointment with the nut on September 23rd.
September 23rd, 2010 - Group meeting with nut.
November 19th, 2010 - I'm still waiting for those other calls.
You'll see it'll go by fast buddy. Especially with school and all.
