WLS...where to start?
hello all,
I am brand new to the WLS journey. In fact I don't even know where to start. how do you go about setting up an appointment with a surgeon? Do you need a referal from an MD?
I should probably mention that I am living in MTL with ~125lbs to lose, BMI =40.
I understand that the public option takes a long time, and the private is very expensive. I looked at a site for Dr Leclerc, that mentions a cost of only 300$. Is that right? did anybody go through him?
what is his waiting time?
I would appreciate any help as I am a little lost in a sea of information.

I think a good place to start is to read all you can about the different kinds of surgeries, so you can have an idea of what you think will work best for you. I don't think it is a good idea to choose a surgeon or surgery by price or waiting time, you have to trust your surgeon...
I don't know dr Leclerc but I read that the 300$ is for the pre op testing only and the surgery is covered by ramq. Dr Leclerc do only the lap band I think. The surgeons at Sacre Coeur do the three types of surgery ( bypass- sleeve and lap band). The other hospitals that does bariatric surgeries are at Cite de la Sante Laval, and Hopital Pierre Boucher in Longueuil. I think the fastest is PierreBoucher or if you are in good health the surgeons in SacreCoeur do also surgeries for those patients at a private clinic( rockland md) but the surgery is paid by ramq. That goes faster. The only doctor I know who does private is Dr Christou and it's around
17000$ for a bypass. So if you have an idea of what surgery you want you can make an appointment with the right doctor.
I dont know if you need a paper from your doctor for other hospitals but at SacreCoeur you need one. Hope that helps!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me!
I'll try to call the rocklandmd and get more info and maybe an appointment. I was looking at the band since it seems the less complicated surgery, although from what I read the results are better with a bypass. Should I meet with a few doctors before deciding? I am in otherwise good health considering...

Hi and welcome to our little community!
Each of our experience is different so I'll try and follow suit to Diane's answer. From my knowledge you do need a referral from a general practitioner for specialized services in Quebec. Once you have that referral since you live in an area with several hospitals you can fax them to a few of your choice and wait to get a consult date with the surgeon. In the meantime I would research as much as possible your options and narrow them down and then discuss them with the surgeon and make a final decision with him/her. Each surgeon has different wait times and procedures to follow.
I had RNY bypass and I went the private route. It cost me 18500 all inclusive plus 150 to open my file. I think the cost are even higher today (I heard around 22000)but I am not sure if that is acurate. You can check out Dr.Christou's website for more details : www.weightlosssurgery.ca. The website is very informative and gives you a good idea of what to expect with each type of surgery. I can't help you with the Rockland Centre as it wasn't open when I started my process. Goodluck and don't be a stranger to the board!

Hi Ana and welcome to the boards.
I've actually been on a waiting list with Dr.Cheistou for close to 4 years (just for a consult) going the RAMQ route. I decided last October to find another Dr.since this waiting time was unbearable and I found Dr.Pierre Garneau via my buddy Derek.
I saw Dr.Garneau in December 2009 and am on the waiting list now for the actual surgery (vertical sleeve) that will hopefully happen very soon.
It took me a very long time to decide the type of surgery I wanted. I researched WLS for many years before deciding on the sleeve. It is very important to be educated and understand that this is not a quick fix but just a tool to help you in your journey.
I hope that you get all the info you need and if you need any info that we can offer please feel free to ask...we're all very friendly!!
