need suggestion for supper with friends...
Friday I will go to a supper with friends. These are friends that I haven't seen in a while... They don't know about my surgery, and I am not sure I want to tell them, but I think I will have no choice... They will eat de la fondue chinoise... I can't eat that meat, neither than crudités or bread... What will I eat? and fondue is a slow meal, I think I will find the supper to be very long not eating... I'd rather postponed but it is a reunion of many peoples, some coming from far, and we don't get the chance to see them often...
So any suggestion on what I can eat? Should I bring my own meal... and how not to make everyone wonder why I am not eating... appart from telling them about surgery?
thanks!

Diane, I can only speak from my experience but fondue chinois was the only social gathering meal I could eat without too many people asking too many questions. The meal is slow and you can choose what to eat on your plate. I stuck with chicken and pork as I have difficulty with meat. I also ate a few mushrooms and a few spoonful salad. I picked at my meal and talked alot (LOL) so not too many people noticed anything different. When asked I mentioned that I was on a diet. Nothing unusal for me LOL. If that doesn't work well I would suggest you just pop by for the coffee after the meal. Say that you have a prior engagement but you would love to join them after. It isn't easy the first few months post op so I do empathize with you. Goodluck.

Thanks Brenda, I didn't think about it this way... It's true, we don't have to eat a big plate, just a little bit at a time. Hope they will have chicken though because I cannot do beef now ( appart from ground beef).
I think I will talk a lot, instead of eating!!!
Going out with friends or restaurant is what I find the most difficult. Last saturday it was my mother in law birthday, usually we go to the restaurant, frequently buffet type... We stay home for this time, but I am sure sometime my family will want to go to the buffet... Don't know what I'll do then...

Diane, when the time comes for buffet you'll go out enjoy yourself, eat what you can and pay alot of money for your small portion of food . It will get easier with time as I think more and more restaurants will be sensitive to our needs and I hoping that one day like in the USA we will be able to order reduced portions on the menu. I promised myself that with this new way of life I would not compromise my social outings. So far I tend to order entree's. One time I ordered mussels and they were soooooo good. I ate about ten and had over thirty left in the plate. My friends helped put a dent in the plate but they were alot left. When the waiter came to pick up the plates he asked if I enjoyed my meal. I said, emmensely but that my appetite wasn't as much as I thought. So all ended well and I paid 13$ for ten mussels but, a good time was had by all and most of all I felt like a normal person and I didn't feel deprived by the WLS. Once you'll feel better you'll gain more confidence that you'll be able to try different foods. It just hasn't been easy for you Diane since surgery. Your worries are quite understandable. Hoping that my experience will give you hope. Have fun with your friends.

Thanks Brenda, you were right for the fondue, it was easy...I ate chicken, and there was also a raclette, so I had a small potato with cheese... There was also a chick peas salad, so ate a few of this also. Nobody noticed what I was eating... And everybody was eating slowly, discussing, and it was perfect! I told them about my surgery, not because they looked at what I ate, but because they noticed how much weight I have lost!
