Hi gang,
I decided to post this as a little bit of motivation for myself. Back in 2005 I had decided to change my life for good. I decided to start a drastic diet that would help me lose weight FAST. Oh and did it ever. I averaged losing 5-10 pounds a week for the first month or so and after only 4 months I had lost a little over 75 pounds. Amazing no? But after those months, I got tired of the diet and decided I would try it on my own. And look where I'm at today. 130 pounds heavier than I was in March of 2006. Am I proud of myself? NO!!! Can I do it again? YES!!! And that is why I want to document what I have done and what I will do again!!! Here they are.

P.S. I'm not starting Dr. Bernstein again. I just wanted to document the last diet I did and how it worked for me. The next thing I will do to lose weight is my surgery. In the meantime, I will continue to watch what I eat and stop snacking at night. Sorry to confuse you all.

OMG, we can really see the difference!!  It's too bad that with the diets, it's so difficult to keep the weight after a few months. I read somewhere that even if an obese person eats like a " normal" person, he will not lose weight, because the metabolism is stabilized.  I just look at all the wls patients, and we have to eat around 600 and 800 cal to lose weight, and around 1200 to maintain...
In my opinion, it is   IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to do that for a lifetime without the surgery... Maybe for those with a few pounds and with many exer****s, but for us, having more than 100 pounds to lose...

So, in a few months you turn will come, and you'll see what a difference it makes... But in the mean time, it's a great idea to try to lose weight, it will make you surgery easier  and safer. But don't starve yourself, you need good vitamins and proteins to heal well after surgery.

Good luck! and keep us posted on your progress!

Good luck with the diet Derek. I agree with Diane. Make sure you are taking in enough protein and your vits as you will need them to help with surgery and recovery. Keep us posted and by the way you look handsome in both pictures!

Hi Brenda,
I think you may have read this wrong. That was my last attempt in 2006. I'm not going back on it again. Somedays I try to low-carb it and it works fine but never losing 5-10 pounds a week. If I could lose 5 pounds in a month I would be happy. Thanks for the kind words however. I sure will look better once I get smaller. I can't wait for that day to come.

How many of us have been there, eh Derek? The good news is after surgery you won't have to be condemened to the regular regain that we've all experienced when dieting in the past. When I lost 70lbs through diet and exercise I got so confident I started to slip up-- next slide, 45 lbs later I was looking into WLS.

It's a great feeling to think that every pound I lose will be the last time I lose it-- I hope we all can make the lifestyle change permanent to sustain weight loss for the rest of our lives. Sorry about the drama, an increase in hormones due to weight loss has me all kinds of over the top emotional lol!

That's the whole point of the surgery. For me it's more of a maintenance thing. I see surgery more as maintenance. If doctors would let us jump ahead of other patients by losing something like 100 pounds and then getting surgery I would be one of those people losing the weight. I know I can do it. I know I can do it fast. But I know that I won't have the will power to do for my entire life. That's why surgery will help when those slip up days come up. I won't be able to slip more then a half slice of pizza or a bit or two of a burger (which I hope won't ever happen but just in case).
