Hi! I've been lurking on this board for the last few weeks and decided to "come out"...You people seem to be a nice bunch!

I have had bilio-pancreatic derivation on november 26th of last year at Hopital Laval in Quebec city. Dr Hould proceeded to the surgery and everything went well. To this day, I had no serious post-op complications. Before surgery, I weighted 435 pounds (I'm 6 feet tall) and as of last week, I've lost 67 pounds. On my 3 months post-op appointment (03/08/2010), I will probably have lost around 75 pounds.

Having surgery in a decision I will never regret! Since february 15th, I'm progressively going back to work (3 days/wk). The first days were a bit stressfull, but I'm quite happy with the way things are going now.

Joel

P.S.: As you've probably guessed, i'm french-speaking, so my written english surely isn't perfect...But I'll give it my best shot!

Hi Joel!
Welcome to the board. Aren't I glad to see another male figure on here. I'm also glad that we have somewhat the same stats too. I'm 6 feet tall and weight 410lbs. I had chosen to go with the DS as well but my Dr told me that because I was young (23 at the time) he strongly suggested the VSG and then we would see where my weight would be at after a year and take a decision then. Anyways, I hoep you stick around. You'll come to notice that we're a pretty good bunch on here. Lots of lurkers have come out in the last couple of weeks so that's good for all of us. So how long were you on the waiting list with Dr. Hould? I've never heard of him. Is he new?

Thanks Derek!

Glad to come across you again (I think we've "met" on some other forum a few months ago).

I've been on hopital Laval waiting list for 2 1/2 years. I was called for pre-op tests last august. My surgery was first scheduled to be on november 19th but then, was reported on the 26th.

Dr Frederic-Simon Hould is a long-time member of hopital Laval surgeons team, along with Dr Simon Biron, Dr Laurent Biertho, Dr Simon Marceau, Dr Stéphane Lebel, Dr Odette Lescelleur. I was very very pleased with Dr Hould; I felt secure from start to finish.

Joel,
I think we may have crossed paths on the Yahoo groups group but I had a hard time following that thing so that's why I'm more or less on here now a days. I think I remember hearing about how you were supposed to have surgery and them pushing it back a week. Anyways, welcome to the board. I can't wait to heat about your success in the future.

Hello Joel! Bienvenue mon ami. Ton anglais est exceptionnel pour un gars de trois rivière . Congratulation on your weight loss. I didn't realize Hopital de Laval did DS's. Glad to have another guy around. Derek must be sooooooooooo relieved. Too much estrogen floating around at certain times! Keep us posted on your progress!

You can never have too many women around you but having an extra dude on board helps.

Welcome Joel, Bienvenue! Tu n'es pas le seul francophone ici, but we write in english because we are on OH and there are some english-speaking people. It's a good way to practice english, without fear of the accent!  WOW what a great weight loss, congrats!  I was on the waiting list at Laval Hospital, I wanted a DS too, but Sacré-Coeur called me before, so I went there. The doctor suggested me VSG instead of the sleeve, saying to me there's too much diarrhea with the DS. Do you have problems with that?... I had my VSG 3 weeks ago and I am having diarrhea since then !!!

I wanted to go to Quebec, even if I am from Montreal because they are the real specialists of DS, and bariatric surgery... But I waited one year and haven't had even the first appointment, and I was offer surgery in Montreal at that time, so...

Well,  glad to have you here!!

Thanks guys!

Erratum: My PSWeight was 345pounds (BMI 47.7)...Not 435 as I've previously written!

@ Diane: You're right about English! Practicing english conversation is kind on a secondary goal I want to achieve by joining this board. As for DS vs diarrhea: I've not experienced post-op diarrhea. Au contraire, I got to watch my fiber and liquid intake to prevent constipation (I used to have looser stools before surgery!!!)

@Brenda: Laval hospital BS team has been performing DS for at least 15 years. Currently, they do +/- 4 surgeries a week. And the staff there is g-r-e-a-t!
And your english is spectacular for a lady from Gaspé!

@Derek: This board is definitively testosterone-deficient! Hang tough! (and yes, we've crossed on the GSOM Yahoo group). And I agree with you, the Yahoo format makes communication a bit painful...

Hello Joel,

I would like to add my welcome to you to this wonderful on-line "family" And yes another guy to the mix is great!! Derek was getting too spoiled from all us ladies so now he needs to share us a little bit...

It's wonderful to hear about your weight lose and recovery.Congratulations!!!
Please do let us know more of what your typical day is in the food department. Would be interesting to see the diff. between the DS and VSG.

Take care,
Ada

Thanks Ada!

Clearly, Derek was geting spoiled...and I humbly offer him help!

As for food consumption: Dairy products, non-multigrain bread, rice, most vegetables (including cabage, cauliflower and brocoli), most fruits,  grind meats, and coffee go down rather well. I have problems with fibrous meats (steak for example). If not chewed to death, those cause abdominal pain. I also stay away from pasta, as it swells in stomach, wich then tends to overflow... I progressively become more and more able to have a "normal diet". Did you have a sleeve? How are you doing?
