Hi Joel,
I read your post. I assume you've had your surgery now (I think it was scheduled for 6/22). Hope all went well.
I was shocked to hear that the average wait time in Canada was over 5 years. I only waited 6 months in Ontario from consult to surgery - plus one month for my GP to book the consult. A total of 7 months from GP to surgery. Now, I was lucky in that 1) I had a GP who supported me & actually called the surgeon to book the consult. 2) I was willing & able to self pay for the consults with the dietician & social worker vs using OHIP-covered resources. This probably shaved off 6 months from the wait. It cost $350, but was covered by my employer's medical plan. 3) I was relatively healthy & didn't need any additional testing (like sleep apnea, stress test etc.) On average, I believe the wait time for in-Ontario surgery is 12-18 months. It is even shorter if we're willing to go to the US for surgery.
I'm glad your turn has finally come. Hope you're doing well.
Andrea
