Gas here in N. Alabama is around $3.10 for regular unleaded ... give or take $0.10. At least that is what it was when I was out driving yesterday. Gosh only knows how much it is today.

I heard a report that there is a town in California where it topped $5.00 per gal.

Don't expect ANY sympathy from me!!!! We pay 1.06p a litre - which is (after long calculations from litres to US galllons and pounds to dollars!!) is over $8 dollars a US gallon!! Most of it is tax - we have always had very high levels of duty imposed on gas for cars (business lorries, farm tractors etc. pay less) and now, because of environmental concerns, we pay even more! Kate, My mom was from England and didn't get her Drivers License until she was 35 and living in California. My female relatives STILL don't drive. It's just a luxury. The women walk to the market and get what they need for the day. I really like that idea, and they sure aren't fat. When we visited we always took our little pull cart along with us when we went into town, and of course milk was delivered, so you always had that. LOVED that milk with the cream floating on the top!

Nancy, most people do use their cars for all major shopping these days as we have gone the US way of big out of town shopping centres. And we probably rely on cars almost as much as I understand you tend to in the US. But walking to the shops is still quite common. I had a friend who lived in the States for a year and she said it was actually quite hard to walk to shops as you had to use major roads and there were no pavements (sidewalks to you!). Government policy now is to encourage us out of cars and so we are getting enormous numbers of cycle paths alongside all roads and obstacles are put in the way of driving - like limiting parking, speed bumps, narrowing roads etc.. As for the milk - we do still have milk men who deliver but I am afraid that too is almost history - so much cheaper in the supermarkets! And most people drink semi-skimmed these days! And guess what - levels of obesity are rising! Kate

oh! oh! Do I gat a prize for having to pay the most? Do I? DO I ? I pay ...........drum roll please.........$3.80 a gallon!!!!!! I have a Chevy Duramax 350 ton crew cab Diesle . The Diesle is cheeper to refine so why is it higher? I told my girls we were going to become Amish and buy a buggy for the horses!!! I do find that it is easier for me on my wallet if I keep my tank full. I wait for it to get down to 3/4 of a tank then I toop it off. It still cost me 30.00 to do that, I only have to do it 3x a month. It is still sickening........ Dayna.
