Help, I need to boost my iron quick, my ferritin is at 9 and transferrin at 434. I did not realize it was this dangerous until checking with others and of course my Dr. told me to take 324 mg. ferrous sulfate iron? What carbonyl iron and how many mg can I take to boost my iron- sundown naturals perfect iron is being discontinued from what I see online and vitaladys tender iron is on back order, is the Cypress Iron brand (Polysaccharide-150mg Elemental) good to take? Thanks!

Penn State Hershey surgical weight loss will be airing a live program on ABC 27 news on Thursday 11/17 @ 7:30pm called "The Weight is Over."  The surgeons/dieticians will be anwsering questions on the live program and also will be sharing stories/interviews of 2 post-op patients- and I am one of those patients!!  I feel very honored and blessed to have this opportunity to share my story and journey of having gastric bypass surgery with Hershey.  I want to thank everyone on this board that had anwsered all my questions prior to and after surgery as well!  I am so glad I did not back out of the surgery and took advice from people here.

If anyone has any specific questions they would like anwsered on the show tomorrow night you can go to ABC27news.com and click on "The Weight is Over" and submit your question there, I believe you will also be able to call in live tomorrow night.   If you are not able to watch the program Thursday but still would like to see the program let me know, the producer will be posting a link on my facebook page.
Also here is the clip of me that they are advertising on channel 27 for the program:

Hi Liz;

My husband and I have both had WLS.  Prior to WLS I spent time with a private therapist so that I would not have the same things going on post and I had pre.  In addition to the pre op therapy when I need to see my therapist I just call, we are not every week as it was at one time but she is there when I need her.

My husband is a therpist that works with pre and post op WLS clients.  We've both found that therapy pre and post is extremely important to seek out a good therapist.

I'm fortunate that I have my husband to bounce things off of, however, I still need my own personal therapist.

Ida
Hi Ida,
Oh wow did you both have your surgeries around the same time?  After talking with some post-ops usually only a couple therapy sessions are needed to get the help we need- I have my first appt next week, so we will see from there.

Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it... I guess I thought I would feel a little ashamed to see a therapist about this, but I am glad to know its not just me having these feelings.

I think some sort of therapy is very helpful after weight loss surgery.  I could probably use some more myself!  It seems to not make sense when we see the positive changes that losing 100+ pounds makes in our lives, but consider what it took in order for that to happen.  For some of us, it meant giving up our best friend (food), our source of comfort (food) and our favorite pasttime (food again).  Sure, I have more energy and can do more physical activity than ever before.  Yes, I have come out of my shell socially, so to speak, more than ever before.  But I find that putting myself out there led to other issues that I didn't have before (alcoholism for me), and also has caused me to deal with feelings and emotions I used to keep stuffed down with food and buried under layers of fat.

Support groups are key for me at this point (AA, OA and Barix).  I did have some therapy to deal with my drinking, but stopped going once I had a firm hold on sobriety.  I think that I could really use some more therapy to get to root causes and conditions for my compulsive overeating as well.

Thanks for sharing your feelings on this forum.  It helps and encourages others when we know we are not alone on this journey.
Hi, yes now that I am going through the 'psychological part' I think therapy is a good idea too, now a year ago I wouldn't have even thought about therapy at all.  I definetly agree with you on the food issue, it used to be a barrier.

I want to get to support groups also, I think that would help.  Where exactly is Barix?

Sure, no problem- I have been very open with every stage of having surgery, except for this part, but I do feel better talking to people about it.  I talked with my mom about going to therapy last night and she thinks it is good since I have been through major changes. Thanks for your reply as well, it is nice to know your not alone in having these issues and I'm thankful to have everyone here that is a great support system (I havent been around here much lately, but I hope to change that! )   Good luck to you!

I called and got an appt with Dr. Rigby next week, I think it will help alot. As she said over the phone after the "honeymoon" phase is over its hard for some people and they think ok now what do I do?

Hi Pam, thanks for sharing- Im glad I am not the only one having these feelings!   I am eating the wrong kinds of foods and need to get back on track, even though I havent gained any weight I just feel crappy.  I notice if I am not drinking enough liquids I get light headed, so I have tried to up my water intake.  I hate when Dr's think its all in your head!!  ok I will call Dr Rigby, I wasnt sure if she just dealt with pre-op patients or not.  I know what you mean, hopefully she can help and you start to feel better soon!  thanks- same to you!   Oh also have you been to any of the meetings after you surgery?  I have not, but wouldnt mind going, I think they are on break for the summer.

Hi Nicole- sorry I should have been more specific with my area :)   I am in York.

Well when I had posted something about it, someone had mentioned therapy- which I never really thought I "needed"- I guess I just thought once I would lose the weight everything would be great!!  Well now it seems as though I am more depressed NOW after losing 100+ lbs than when I was obese!!  Just doesn't make any sense!  I also have noticed the change in myself more recently (like within last 6 mths) also the same time frame when I had stopped losing so much weight as well...
so I am open to suggestions or recommendations of therapists in the area to try it out to see if it helps at all.

Hi, yes we did!  Dr. Rogers is great!!  oh ok I tried calling the center today, but no one anwsered.  If you dont mind me asking, what are your reasons for doing the post-op therapy (its ok if you'd rather not say, just wondering)  It seems since I have plateaued with my weight loss something is different, my husband noticed too, just I am not my normal self anymore- kind of out of it, in a daze, I have started supplementing more B12 and also Vitamin D (not sure if that has anything to do with my "mood")  Its hard to explain, but its as if I feel very weak and no energy at all.  My pcp would rather not put me on any meds at this point, because of trying to get pregnant within the next 6mths- a year.  So I thought maybe talking to a therapist would help.  I guess I would see Dr. Rigby at the center?     thanks so much, I am happy with the amount of weight I have lost :)

NO!

I didn't have WLS Surgery to follow a "diet plan"  If I could do that, I wouldn't have needed WLS to begin with.

I follow the plan that is recommended by NUTS for my surgery.

High protein, Low carbs, low fat, etc.

Post WLS, I find it JUST as frustrating and ridiculous to follow a diet plan that we would have tried pre op.

Get back to basics. KNOW your plan from your NUT, and follow that.

The fad diets do not work. Or none of us would be on OH.

Just being honest, and speaking as a long time post op.

Good luck and hugs!

that is very true about the diet plans!!  i am going to get out my book from Hershey and follow that!
thanks so much for your advice!!  :)

BTW, do you have to go to PCP to get blood work?  I give my patients the slip for what we want done and they go straight to the lab.  I know that many times it depends on your insurance where you go.
thank you!  I have found another PCP that is supportive in WLS and they told me just to give them a list of what labs I want done and they said there should be no reason why a Dr. should refuse them to a patient!!  So I am very happy!  I have a message into my surgeons office in the meantime so that they can give me my lab slip for this bloodwork.

thank you so much Liz!  I would appreciate the list!  This is not the first time she has given me a hard time about getting labwork done, and I mentioned to her about the deep ridges in my fingernails and feeling exhausted lately maybe being a sign of iron deficiency, her response was oh no dont worry about that, your levels have been GREAT!  umm yeh, and your levels can NEVER change right?  You dont need a degree in medicene to know thats not true!!  so i guess i will be in search of another Dr, I would like to find one that is somewhat knowledgable in WLS.

Ok so I called my PCP dr to get some additional things added to my labwork slip, then I get a call tonight saying that those additional things cannot be added, because last time I had bloodwork done those levels were FINE!  yeh ok thats why my vitamin D was at 30, and they said was FINE, but right on the paper said in the deficient range!   what is the big deal about having labwork done on levels for your own body!!!!  And the additional things that needed added were lets see, total iron, pre-albumin, lipid panel etc... (because I mentioned to her about me feeling exhausted and deep ridges in my fingernails, seem to be a common symptom of an iron deficiency, and her anwser was oh well your levels have been great so far, so dont worry about it!) Like your levels can never change??!?!!  dumbass!  grrr i am so pissed, should i contact them again or look for another Dr?  They said I can contact my surgeon if i need those additional levels checked...
So any suggestions for PCP Dr's in the York area that have a semi- understanding of WLS?
