Dr. Marymor--perplexed
Theresa - I had similar experiences with both of them. We are all entiled to our opinions. Quite honestly I had many issues with Barix dropping the ball after Dr Brader left and I was a "transplant" with another surgeon. I have heard that Dr Marymore in an excellent surgeon but that he is curt and to the point (Not always a bad thing but it makes some uncomfortable)
I seem to remember you being in the Phoenixville area right? Dr Brader is in Lancaster and is just a wonderful man all around, I'd recommend him to anyone!

I think you should definitely take some time, speak with other patients and try to figure out if Dr. M is the best fit surgeon wise for MM. If not it is better to find someone who is then go throughthe surgery with someone you and MM are not entirely comfortable with. MM needs to do what is best for her at this point and while some may connect with Dr. M others may not. I know as much as I adored Dr. Pupkova--not everyone was as comfortable with her. It is definitely a matter of finding the surgeon and saying to yourself "Yes--I trust this person with my life." It is a huge undertaking. I hope that you are able to find the best surgeon for MM that you both feel comfortable with.

You and I are Dr Boe/Barix babies, and I know we both loved him. I personally have nothing but good things to say about Barix and their staff, but we all know that it is a very personal type of surgery and we have to feel comfortable with not only the surgeon but the staff as well.
I've never met Dr Marymor but have only heard wonderful things about him on this forum. That being said, if MM truly isn't comfortable with him then she really needs to think long and hard before having him as her surgeon. You want someone you feel comfortable talking to and to be able to express concerns, fears, etc. Maybe he was having an 'off' day? Everyone does. Maybe another appointment with him to see if your first impressions were warranted - or maybe after meeting with him again you'll both feel more comfortable with him. If she's gone through the process this far it might be worth it?
As for Toni if she's not operating on MM or even in the operating room I wouldn't give that a second thought. Same with RICK - not sure where he came from but he obviously doesn't know you or this forum.
Take care - I hope it all works out for MM and if Dr Marymor isn't the one I'm sure there is another wonderful surgeon out there that she will feel more comfortable with. More and more hospitals are starting to specialize in this type of surgery - look for one that has Center of Excellence credentials.

Just to add the Dr. M was Mary's surgeon, and he has taking her frantic cell phones calls in the past when she had an emergency issue. I've never met him, but he's ok in my book, and probably deserves another chance.
My surgeon had zero bedside manner, constantly sported 5:00 shadow, and always dressed like he just fell out of bed, but he was a FANTASTIC surgeon who did right by me. Food for thought.

Dr. Marymor was not my surgeon but I have done folllow up with him since Dr. P left. He really is a good Dr. when you get to know him and he does listen and I do think MM would be in great hands. I am hoping Arlene will jump in here she is the one that gave the glowing review to make me try Dr. M then he attended one of my pre-op meetings I was leading and really made me like him.
I personally like Toni and never found her to be unprofessional but everyone is different yet I am a laid back person and chat away with her.

Calm down everyone, I can say from experience that Dr. Marymor can be distant and cold, but to know him is to love him. He has your best interest at heart and wants to be sure that your making a decision you can live with for life. He is a great surgeon and cares for everyone of his patients whether they realize it or not.

WOW is what I can say to the responses on this post, where Rick came from I have no idea and while I love my original surgeon (Dr. P), I also realize that what we look for in a surgeon is different for all and one size does not fit all. . . that being said, when Dr. P left Barix I was not sure what to do, I thought well my PCP could do follow ups, but the truth is, I want to have a surgeon familiar with the things we as WLS post-ops experience and I want someone who will go the extra distance.
Re-enter Dr. Marymor, and his patients all have wonderful things to say about him, most particularly my good friend, Arlene, who raves about him, so I decided to give it a shot and while I can say I understand how your MM would see him as quirky and crudmudgeonly, I can also say, that what struck me about him, is his honesty and tell it like it is approach, not to mention the fact that I've known folks that had him, and some who didn't, yet he went out of his way to be there for them and that is, for me, what I want in a surgeon, especially one that did not do my surgery. I admire that more than perhaps the fact that he did not seem to make eye contact with me when I spoke to him. He still made great suggestions on what I need to do going forward and spoke of the realities of post-WLS life.
So you're no Debbie downer, just a concerned person and let's face it, most people who have this surgery LOVE their particular surgeon, so by all means, MM should shop around and so long as they meet the requirements of being well skilled at this sort of surgery and that should you need them in some capacity 5 years down the road, there is that willingness to be in it for the long haul, go with who gives your MM that sense of comfortability.
