OT: Animal Rescue Help??

Hi everyone - since this is a huge network I thought I'd come here to ask for any guidance or assistance that may be available.

I am in possession of a small black & white full-bred papillon - our guesstimate is that he is 6-7 years old. He's an adorable little dog - came into my home yesterday. He belonged to my neighbor who was found deceased in her house. She has no friends - her only sister wants no part of the dog or anything else for that matter - very sad situation. The dog was dehydrated and almost starving, covered in feces and scared to death.

While the police, ME, animal control (another dog died in the house - they figure the woman had been dead at least 3 weeks) so I brought the dog in, bathed him, neighbors brought food, a crate and a bed. He's getting along well with my dog - unfortunately he is NOT housebroken, so we had a very long night of clean-up duty. We tried crating him - all he did was bark. I'm sure he's still scared and very confused, but seems very trainable. He sits and walks well on the leash, and he will potty when take outside. Unfortunately he doesn't know the difference between inside and outside.

So I'm working my way through the internet, friends and family trying to find a rescue that could take 'Chester' (thats what I named him since he has no tags and I don't know his name - he seems to like it, tho) - and I was wondering if anyone out here has rescue contacts or knows of a rescue in the Philadelphia vacinity that could help out.

I'd love to keep him but can't - with hubby and I both still working I can't afford to put 2 dogs in doggy daycare.

Last Chance Ran*****uakertown,Pa. may take him.  They take dogs from PACA in Phila.  I am surprised that a Humane Society officer was not contacted, but maybe because you took him in, they were not needed.

Thank you both for the great information!! Hopefully I won't need it now but I'm keeping it just in case our other option doesnt work out.

As of right now my stepdaughter wants the dog - she has a nice fenced yard and other dogs and someone is home all day. The dog is doing very well with potty training - obviously somewhere along his little life bs was housebroken because he's picking it up so quickly again. He's also calming down and getting along better with my dog. He's a bit territorial with his food but I think that's to be expected since he had gone without food for a while.

Hi Kathy,

Was busy all weekend, did not come on to see this earlier. . .  he may be having issues, simply because of the trauma he sustained with his former owner and confusion.  When I got Roxie, she had been in the "shelter/rescue" system for less than a month, actually about as long as "Chester" and when I first brought her home, she would go wherever.  I bought some wee wee pads, but after less than a week, she was doing her business outside as she needed.  So perhaps that is Chester's problem, anyway, that is a wonderful thing you're doing and I'm sure he will wind up being a great addition wherever he winds up.

Hi Laureen - Chester, who's real name is TeeBee (just found out yesterday) is doing much better with his potty issues - but I also found out he was not neutered (he had a lot of hair and didn't appreciate me snooping around back there!! so i'm sure that's part of him marking everywhere) - anyway, I was lucky enough to find the vet that has taken care of him in the past and they have been wonderful! I took him over yesterday and she checked him out - said he seems to be fine - they're going to bring him up to date on his shots and bloodwork, neuter him, and remove a little cyst we found on his side. They're also working with me on the bill - they knew his owner well because she had to board them there for 3 months 2 years ago when she was in rehab for a broken shoulder. They were all happy to see him and fawned all over him. My stepdaughter Lynda is going to adopt him - she lives in Jersey and has two other small dogs and a big yard - also someone home all day so they can continue with his housebreaking.

He is a little sweetheart and the poor little thing has been through a lot, but he'll make a nice addition to Lynda's family, and I'll get to see him from time to time.

That is wonderful, I'm sure TeeBee's owner is smiling down, knowing that he is being well cared for and be in a wonderful loving home with all his needs taken care of.
