Ever wake up choking?

OK.  So, last Friday at lunch I had half a piece of meatloaf for lunch.  I felt full but not too bad.  I wasn't hungry at all the rest of the day.  I realized that the meatloaf was not moving past my pouch.  Well, dinner rolls around and the wife asks if I'm going to eat with the family.  I knew I wasn't hungry and probably a little stuck but I sat down with them anyway.  I had maybe 3 small bites of chicken and then called it quits.  The rest of the night was full of hiccups, spitting out all my saliva (I couldn't take any thing else in my stomach) and feeling extremely stuck.  I walked around and tried to get it moving...no luck.  It finally comes time to go to bed.  I tried laying on my left side and I'm just laying there gurgling in my throat.  I know that I'm not ready for sleep but I'm tired.

The next thing I know I'm dreaming and choking at the same time.  I fight my way to wakefulness and I realize that I'm laying on my back and i have vomited in my mouth. I was choking on my own vomit.  Holy ****!  How does that happen?  I run to the bathroom and do a little retching.  Not much comes up but I feel a little better.  I think Te retching actually helped me get unstuck.  I went back to bed and all has been well since then.  I'm OK now, but man did that suck!!!

Anyone else ever experience anything like that?

Its a form of grouchy pouch, it happens to me when I eat to many popsicles, I get a sort of reflux and can't lay down or I'll drown.

Some days your the dog and some days your the hydrant.

Hmmm...it could be one of two things....

The night time thing sounds more like reflux

I'm wondering though if the beginning of all of this isn't a stricture?  Where the opening to the pouch begins to close and won't allow stuff to pass through.  The whole not being able to swallow your own saliva makes that a VERY real possibility.

Any issues since then?  Even "little" issues that you might otherwise brush off?

It could be a stricture but I dont think so.  I have returned to normal (whatever that is).  Everything is going down like it was before.  I will keep an eye on it to see it things are getting stuck more often.  i think it was just the hamburger.  I may not be ready for that yet, at least in the form of meatloaf.

thanks

Sounds like when I get the foamies really, really bad and keep bringing up saliva and it feels like vomiting but not quite. Fortunately I have never woken up choking on it, but then again I'm a side sleeper and usually when I get that sick from something being stuck I end up curling up in a fetal position and eventually it will pass (after much dry heaving and foaming...).

If you're doing okay now I would say it was a piece of meatloaf - maybe just too dry? Took me a long time to tolerate meats of any kind and I'm still very careful - most of the time its my own dumb fault for eating too fast or not chewing enough.

Glad you're feeling better...

uhhhh....yuck! You woke UP with vomit in your throat? I've not had that happen and totally hope not to. I drown meatloaf and any ground beef in ketchup. No problems for me with ground beef. Now, chicken is another story. I could eat 2 bites of chicken on an empty pouch and be sick for 4 hours. I've also got a mind over matter issue with food stuck. When my mouth starts filling with saliva, all I have to do is lean over the sink and It's like a suggestion thing, I puke. Yesterday I ate pizza sauce, cheese and turkey pepperoni, the burnt edge apparently got stuck. I walked around for a while to no avail. Went to the sink, leaned over a bit and it just came up. Lucky me, I can puke on command.

I feel myself rambling...so, I guess I'm of no help, but, I hope that doesn't continue to happen.

When you feel "stuck", Dr Pupkova recommends drinking sips of hot clear liquid (decaf tea, ho****e with lemon juice, etc).  The heat can relax the stoma and allow whatever is stuck to pass through and the liquid can help "wash" it through.  She also recommends not putting anything else OTHER than sips of hot liquid into your mouth until you're sure the stuck-ness is gone.

Hope this helps in case of future events!
