Confessions of a Fat Girls closet

As many of you can confess, prior to WLS we have all had several sizes of clothing in our closets. Mine have ranged from a size 18 to 26. This week I have ventured waaaayyy back in my closet and pulled out two dresses that I had forgotten were there and I don't even remember wearing them, ever!  I was pleasantly surprised to find that one is a 1x the other a 20W.  I was even more pleasantly surprised when I put them on and they FIT!!!  So tonight I ventured a little furthur into that same closet only to find three more dresses.  Two a size 20W and one a size 18W. Given my success in the other dresses fitting earlier in the week, I thought, what the hell, I'll try them on.  HOLY CRAP!!  They all fit!!!!  I just can't get my head around the fact that I can wear a size 20!!!  I haven't been able to even squeeze into anything in that size in well over three years.  Which was the last time I went to Weigh****chers.

I just thought I'd share my little wow moment with all of you.  Thanks to all of you, I am on the right track to wearing even smaller sizes.

Amazing, ain't it???  You just wait---lots more WOWs like this are coming!!!  I remember when someone gave me a size 12 skirt, and I told my boyfriend there was no way that thing was gonna fit.  But I tried it anyway---and it fit!!!  It's a truly wild journey we're on!!!

Congratulations on your 'new' dresses!!!

Cyd,

Congratulations - that's a great measure of your ongoing progress.  NOW... if you haven't yet, GET RID OF THE BIG STUFF!!!

Like you, I used to keep that range of sizes as my "safety net" in case I had a "fat day" (which inevitably turned into a "fat week" and then a "fat year"  etc.).  Part of my promise to myself this time was to not allow myself to have that type of safety net because I WILL NOT let myself go back.  Getting rid of my "fat clothes" is part of the process of making it real to myself that this is my new life and my new way of being.  It was part of purging myself of bad habits, bad ways of thinking, addictive behaviors, etc. - and the clothes are a visible symbol of that.

The other challenge I made to myself was to no longer buy clothes that enabled me to hide from the world.  For my entire life I had purchased clothes that I felt would keep me from being seen, or that would disguise me from the world in key ways.  I no longer let myself do that - I'm trying to remain accountable to myself and to the world - if I can't "hide" in my clothes, I have to make sure I'm staying true to myself and my program.  Just another way to assist in my success... maybe that will also help you as an idea.

You're doing so well - keep it going!  And savor these moments!

Thank you Karen,

I do plan on getting rid of the BIG STUFF very soon.  Just waiting for that rainy weekend weather when I'm cooped up inside.  I too have always bought my clothes to hide one thing or another. I've always bought my tops a size larger to go over my momma gut that now, seems to be shrinking. YEAH!  I know in my head that I NEVER want to be these sizes again. I have a granddaughter who is 16 mos old.  I want to be able to get on the floor and play with her and be able to get back up on my own without needing assistance from my husband or a chair!  I know I'm on the right track in doing so.  She is what motivates me to keep it going.  And the fact that my knees don't hurt nearly as much as they normally did.

Thanks so much for the support.

That is truly awesome Cyd!! I loved measuring my success in clothing sizes rather than the scale because we all know how frustrating that can be. Sadly I didn't have smaller sizes stashed away because I had truly given up hope of ever being 'normal' again. But now I can go into almost any store and buy cute things off the rack andnot have to pay a fortune for them.

So enjoy your 'new' clothes. That's fantastic!!

That's one of the most rewarding parts of this weight loss adventure. I was also digging in the back of my closet throughout my losses and I'd be so bummed when outfits I had saved were too big by the time I found them. I recently found a size 14 outfit that I always adored but, never fit into. Still has the tags on. I lost my whole butt and when I put the pants on they are ridiculously large. The shirt is big, but not unwearable. I was hoping to wear it, but, alas...it's going to go to someone else. I also had a pair of khaki capris with a super cute belt from Christopher Banks...same thing. I think I wore them once. When I found them...too big.

I made myself feel better about it by going SHOPPING!!! I tried on size 8 SKINNY jeans and they FIT!!! I didn't buy them yet, still too warm and by the time I need them, maybe they'll be on sale. I just felt better knowing they fit.

Have fun playing dress up in your own closet. Pretty soon you will be wearing a size 8 and you won't remember how you got there!
