Protein Supplement Suggestions...

I've been bad this past week since surgery, and I'm not getting anywhere near the 70 - 80 grams of protein per day that I should be.  I'm lucky if I'm getting between 40 - 50 grams per day.  Before surgery I had purchased the chocolate Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein powder from Walmart, because I had read different places that it tastes just like chocolate milk.  Like an idiot, I didn't try it before surgery.  It's absolutely disgusting and it makes me wanna throwup after I take a sip.

So I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a protein supplement that doesn't taste so horrible?  Thanks.

Hey Dave,

First off keep in mind that you will slowly work up to your protein goals each day.  I'm not saying that you can excuse yourself completely from NOT getting in your protein, but it DOES take time.

Protein supplements...well...many of them, taste like crap in my opinion.  However, you have to come to some sort of agreement with yourself that it is like "medicine" and not meant to be completely tasty.  It's to help you HEAL and be STRONG.  There were many times I had to think of it that way to get it down.

My "favorites", even now, are by Nectar.  I used to love their espresso flavored one (caffeine free), and I currently have just started using protein powders again to jump start some weight loss and kicking bad habits.  I got their chocolate truffle and their strawberry one.  Both tolerable.

For the espresso one I used to mix it w/ milk, a NSA chocolate carnation instant breakfast and make a chocolate mocha type shake.  Generally I would add ice to the blender to make it thick.

The chocolate one that I recently bought I blended up with milk, a frozen banana, and a drizzle of sf chocolate syrup.

I've been told that vanilla protein powder w/ OJ tastes similar to a creamsicle although I've never tried it.

As your food stages progress, it'll be easier and easier to get your protein goals met.

Go to GNC and get some sample packets.  Remember...it's not which ones you like, it's the ones you can tolerate (even barely) to help yourself heal.

Hang in there!

Actually after I ended up posting here, I emailed a friend of mine from the west coast.  He's heavily into weight lifting and is always taking supplements.  He too is also recommending that I try Nectar, so I'm gonna go online and order some.  Since it will take a few days to get here, I'm gonna see if a friend of mind can take me over to GNC tonight to try some different things...  Thanks!

Dave,

I like to try things at GNC because if you don't like something they will take it back and recommend something else! Just make sure you keep the receipt. I just picked up their brand of AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60. You use one scoop in 8 ounces of water or milk. It actually tastes pretty good. Of course I am 15 months out so I can pretty much tolerate anything.

I remember those days in the beginning were rough, but it will get better.

There is also ISOPURE which is more expensive but it is like a juice drink and not a milk drink. The AMP is cheaper than the ISOPURE and it comes in a variety of flavors.

Just some suggestions....

Good luck

GNC lets you open something up, use it, and then return it for a refund if I don't like it?  Wow, that's a pretty good deal.  Thanks, I didn't know that.

That is why I like going there! I cannot tell you how many protein jars I gave away because I didn't like them! They also sell another protein drink called MAX protein. It is in a big blue and silver jar, but only certain GNC stores carry it. Maybe try online to see if they have it! The chocolate tastes pretty good, some think it tastes like yoo hoo, but I think that was going a bit far... Protein drinks are medicine for your body as Pam said! This too shall pass and before you know it you will be on solid food again....

hi there,
you could also try using a blender or even a magic bullet to make smoothies. just add ice and water to the protein and it will come out like a milkshake. add some fresh fruit to make it delicious.  i like strawberry and banana( strawberry or vanilla protein with a few frozen strawberries and a piece of banana, and some ice cubes), and chocolate and peanut butter (chocolate protein powder with a little peanut butter and ice cubes). if you make it thick enough you can eat it with a spoon and the cold helps to kill some of the protein taste. i sure everyone here has a favorite recipe.

Oh yum!  Using some peanut butter and some ice with my chocolate protin power might make it passable..  I'll definitely give that a try later.  Thanks!

I'm a Nectar fan.  I'm also one of those freaky girls who ACTUALLY likes my protein drinks.

Favorites =

Cappucino, Chocolate Truffle, Fuzzy Navel.

mmmmm

But.. we all have different taste buds so try and find some people around you who might use them and ask for a sample.  Bet they won't mind.

You LIKE your protein drinks?  Wow, you have really bad taste!  JUST KIDDING!

I guess that I will just have to taste alot of different supplements until I find a winner...  Or at least one that is half tolerable.
