I have not met a shake I don't like either.  I use milk to add to the flavor and protein grams.  I also add different sugar free syrups depending on my mood.  I have done chocolate mint using chocolate protein powder with mint extract or syrup, chocolate peanut butter, fruit shakes, etc.

There are so many options.

David,

A couple of things here...

1.  You're only a week out from surgery.  You are still working up to getting your full protein allotment in.  As long as your focus is always to get your protein in FIRST and then only to supplement your meal with other things once you've gotten your protein, you will be ok... just work up to it as quickly as you can.  There are protein supplements called "bullets" that you might be able to deal with - they're small drinks "shots" that are concentrated protein.

2.  As to taste...Your body is still in "shock" from anesthesia, you're in ketosis (rapid processing of protein and fats), and you are detoxing from sugar, carbs, and fats.  All of that leads to dramatic changes in your taste perception... and those changes will continue over the next couple of months.  What you can't tolerate today may taste good tomorrow... and vice versa.  Annoying as all heck, but it is what it is.  That's why we advise pre-ops NOT to stock up on anything pre-op... because what they like before surgery they may not like at all after surgery. There are numerous things that I now like that I couldn't stand before surgery... and a few things that I now do not like that I used to.

3.  Protein powder can be made into everything from smoothies to ice cream to brownies.  It just takes a little imagination and experimentation.  A couple of resource for you are:
Barix protein drink recipes - http://www.barixclinicsstore.com/recipe_main.html
Bariatric Eating.com recipes - http://www.bariatriceating.com/BEhealthnutrition/recipes.php
And as you get a little farther along, Eggface routinely includes things like protein ice cream and other recipes:  theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/

4.  You're in Hatboro - can you try to make it to the Barix meeting in Langhorne this Saturday?  (or third Wednesday night)  I think you'll get some great support, some ideas, and some resources that will help you.  Many of us on the board go to the Barix meetings so it's a good way to meet us in person.  They're free and we welcome folks from any doctor or type of surgery.

I hope some of these might help a bit!

Hope to see you on Saturday!

Karen
