Really depressed and unable to eat much protein - terrible nutrition record.  I really need a support group.  Any help for me?  Many thanks,  Laura

Laura,

Do you have a nearby support group available from your doctor or the hospital where you had your surgery?  How far out are you?  It is good that you came on the board and reached out.  Do you journal? listen to music? exercise?  All of these are good ways of releasing stress instead of turning to food.  I wish you lived in the eastern part of the state.  We have a great support group at Barix clinics that is meeting this Saturday.  I am sure that others wil be responding to your message.  Sorry that I don't live closer to you - I am in Phila.  Just wanted you to know that you are not alone and I will hold you in my thoughts and prayers today.  Take care.

Greetings,
I am sorry you are experiencing depression, but it is not uncommon.  Are you in therapy?  If not, it might be a good idea.  When we stop overeating, we realize that the negative emotions we were experiencing are more intense, and therapy can help us identify what we are eating about, and help us learn coping skills.

Definitely journal and exercise.  Also, ca,ll the hospital you had your surgery at and see if they can recommend a support group.

Laura,

Good for you for reaching out and recognizing that you need help.  That's a great first step.

You'll find a lot of online suppot here.  I'd also suggest looking into local groups (ask your doc's office and the hospital where you had your surgery about any local groups).  Also, there are several folks on this board from out your way, so perhaps they know of a group or you guys can get together and make one!

For online support, I'll dive right in... You say you're unable to eat much protein.  Tell me more - what have you tried and what is the "unable" part of the equation?  What is keeping you from following the plan?

As to depression, you're at a point in your journey where your body is releasing a lot of hormones that have been stored in your fat cells.  At about the 3 - 6 month point, those hormones start flooding into your system, which can throw you for a loop.  Recognize first, it's normal and it's chemical... second do what you can to communicate that to those around you so THEY understand what's going on... third, seek help from your doctors and/or a therapist to help get you through it.  It WILL get better.  Improving your overall nutrition will help as will exercise.

So... what are you doing on a daily basis and how can we help you?

Laura, when I had my pre op psychological evaluation, the doctor cautioned me that at about 4 months, be very alert to symptoms of depression.

These are related to the inability of the endocrine system to keep up with rapid weight loss - as Karen said, it's hormonal.

He recommended that if symptoms emerged...hustle in to talk about some counseling and possible  need for medication.

We are a terrific on line community here - we shoud all be grateful to live in PA and be part of this board! Let us help you too by jumping in on various threads and discussions. Look forward to getting to know you!

Laura,

As you have heard, you are doing all the right things in reaching out and saying how you feel and this board is a great venue for support. . .  also, as has been said, depression can be a part of this journey, some of it is hormonal in nature and some can be related to other issues, so head it off at the pass and speak to your surgeon (or someone in his office) and see if there is any local support groups or a physcologist that is familiar with this journey to help you through it.  In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to any of us. . .

Wishing you better days ahead, Laureen

Hi Laura - as all the amazing folks here have already pointed out - this is one of the best places to go to get help.  And we all need help! (even the crazy loud people like me!)

My suggesstion is to talk with us - and find a professional.  We all didn't get to this board by accident.  We have had food issues for a long time and need to figureout how to work through those. There are several people from the Pittsburgh area on here and I know they go to groups.  Become a regular if at all possible.  We are a non-judgemental group that truly only wants the best for each of our familiy members.

Keep smiling as best you can and remember how amazing and brave you are for taking a ride on this journey!

Thank you all for answering Laura's post. I too am having this same issue. Feeling more depressed, and a " I don't care attitude". I am getting my nutrition though.  I am lucky to have a therapist to talk to but neither of us knew about the hormonal thing. Does it go away on its own? With Doc's suggestion I will be increasing my antidepresent tomorrow. Hopefully I see a change within the week.

I'm Laura's husband.  She was hospitalized on Tuesday night and released on Wednesday for severe panic attacks and depression.  She's home now and under her doctor's orders she's staying home from work for the next two weeks.  Right now we're looking for a psychiatrist and a therapist to help her through her issues.  I think she's been suffering with depression for a while but never admitted it to herself and the situation with the surgery has just made it worse.  thank you all for your concern.  She'll try and come on soon with an update on how she's doing.
