Female issues after surgery
Okay, girls, I have some questions.
I am 9 days away from surgery. I have heard a few stories about hormonal changes after RNY.
I have heard that your period can start again or stop. I have heard the release of estrogen from your fat cells completely screws up your body, making you go through puberty again. I heard you can become very fertile.
Now, how much of this could apply to me? I am 52 years young, haven't had a period in over a year
and lost one tube because of a tubal pregnancy 10 years ago. I DO NOT want a period OR a baby!! ![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/eek.gif)
THANKS for sharing any info, I plan to ask my dr about this when I see him.

Because of my PCOS and not wanting to have to take 2 forms of BC I went on the Depo shot... it is the only BC that can't be messed up by antibotics (this is what my OB told me)... I was on it for over a year after WLS and went off it once it started to cause me not to loose weight... and then I went on the nuvaring... and that is how we got Annabelle... so, I would talk to your doc and see what would be good fit for you...
Deb,
I had a lot of crazy periods for about the first year, including a surprise the day of my surgery. Of course I was not prepared. But, as you lose weight it will affect estrogen since it is stored in fat cells.
I am ten years younger than you, so it might affect you differently. Good luck with your surgery!!
Let us know how you are doing.

Hey babe - don't know anything about the fertile thing as we have taken surgical intervention to prevent THAT mess. I can tell you that for me - my hormones and PMDD were out of control - I noticed it and upped my meds about 6 months out. My period remained relatively regular as it always was. I never had any issues in my life - fortunately. And I am soooo totally jealous if your NOT having a period! OY!
Good luck!
Good luck!
Deb,
When I had my surgery last June, I hadn't had my period for about 2 years. After surgery I did not get it back. The estrogen that was released from the fat cells caused me to be a little emotional at times. I also saw an increase in my libido. My hot flashes didn't even come back. I was very careful to continue taking my anti depressants and to keep in touch with my psychiatrist in case I saw any extreme changes.
Preganancy concerns were never a problem for me because I wasn't in a situation where pregnancy could occur. I was 52 going on 53 at the time of my surgery. There is an over 50 board that you could go on to get more opionions if you want.
Best of luck with the surgery. Try not to get too freaked out about the hormones being released. Remember that it's happening because you are losing weight
. Take care.

Deb,
Considering you haven't had a period in over a year - I doubt that the estrogen release etc will bring it back. And I doubt you are going to be able to have a baby, regardless of how fertile surgery makes one.
You will probably still have some sort of emotional upset during post op for a good couple of months. It's a lot on your body, it's a LOT of hormonal release, it's a lot on your emotions as you attempt to navigate through life without your friend food.
Don't worry - we'll listen when you are freaking out over the wind blowing the wrong way, lol!
