How much post op time is needed after surgery?

Hi everybody!  I'm trying to figure out how much time I will need to take off work to recouperate. I'm planning on having a RNY probably around November /December if the insurance co approves it.  I haven't talked to the surgeon yet, that's my next step. I'm just curious as to how long it took everyone to get back into the swing of things after your surgeries.

I was off for about 2 weeks.  Everyone is different.  You may find that you need less or more time.

ETA: I was a temp and didn't get paid for the time I was off.  I would love to have taken more time, but I could hear my bank account emptying out.

Thank you ladies, so roughly two weeks or so is about the norm. I was hearing possibly 6 weeks and I'm thinking if I was out from work for six weeks, I may not want to go back! LOL

Hi!

I was lucky enough to plan my surgery right at the beginning of June before summer vacation. I am a teacher, so I took sick leave from a couple of days before surgery until the end of the summer. This surgery was SO much easier than I thought it would be. By day 5 I was driving and feeling pretty good. Like Julia said, everyone is different. My surgeon said four weeks recovery...

Good luck with your upcoming surgery. We will make room for you on the loser's bench!!

Hi Michele - welcome to the PA Boards - I , liike Beth - am a teacher - I had my surgery 4 days before spring break - I was then off that next week and was bored to tears!  I actually still had some gas pains until the day I went back to work - I spent the whole day on my feet and felt GREAT!  It turns out - moving does make you heal faster! :)

Good luck with your process!

I'm a nurse and will probably make the worst pt.  You're right though moving right after surgery helps you heal faster. As far as the gas, I'll just phart my way back to work. I work in long term care so if I phart at work, I can always blame it on the pt.... "Wasn't me!"

Funny - I blame it on my students every afternoon - another joy of moving around the room - by the time they smell it - I am NOWHERE near the offensive oder!  ahhhh....Love my life! :)
