The 10 Most Common Mistakes Weight Loss Surgery Patients Make

Shilpa,
I am not sure why you would get flamed.  I have struggled with the same 30 pounds since I relapsed with alcohol in 2007.  When I gave up my sobriety, I gave up some of the rules of WLS.  Now that I have almost six months sober, I am determined to begin anew with the list and making sure I follow the rules this time.

In AA we say the goal is "progress not perfection."

Thank you  for understanding only the people who have walked in our shoes before us can relate but the sad part is some people quickly forget why they are where they are. I was specifically referring a post a couple of days ago about being down about old timers. I am an old timer and would never rain on any one's parade and like to think if I take the time to give you advise and or suggestions I am doing it because I care. Just my 2 cents and you are my hero. You really are. You have your plate full and still manage to keep on truckin'

People comment on my over 100 pound weight loss and attribute it to my WILLpower, but it is my WANTpower: I WANT to be thin and healthy more than anything else!

It is funny, my sister had lap-band surgery, and I started giving her the advice I was given four years ago, when I first started this journey.  I treasured the old-timers who helped me acclimate myself to the new lifestyle.  I also have years of experience in AA, where I was encouraged to follow certain guidelines, or fall into relapse.  Pity I did not listen to that advice either.  Live and learn.

I don't feel like a hero.  I am just very honest about my journey, and the pitfalls I find myself in a lot.

Hugs,
Trish

Shilpa, I'm so grateful for the help, advice, and examples of those who walked the WLS path before me! There is never a time I have gone to a support group meeting when I have not learned something I have taken with me.

Those who cannot see value in the help of others simply don't know - yet - how important it is. There is nothing on OH called the "sunshine and lollipops" board - because that's not part of the experience, is it?

We enjoy the wow moments and the rewards of weight loss and improved health, but we all face the struggles. Each person's path is unique, so we might meet a particular challenge at a different point in time or in a slightly different way than the next person, but we can learn a LOT from each other. One of the first lessons I learned at Barix was how essential support is to long term success.

As I close in on my one year surgiversary, I've been in a reflective mood about all of this, so these posts are very well timed.

GREAT  posts, Trish...I'm glad I'm getting a chance to catch up from the past few days and read them!

Thanks Pam.  I borrowed them from Molly on the Overcoming Binge Eating board.

They have given me hope during a time when I was feeling hopeless and disgusted.

Hugs,
Trish
