New job
Some of you may remember that I started working for a staffing agency as an LPN about two weeks ago. That is the first I have worked in about 13 years. Well it didn't take me very long at all to realize that staffing work is not something I am cut out to do. I really didn't like it very much. Always being somewhere different and not knowing your surroundings or the routine of your patients. Anyhow I decided that I needed to find a permanent full time position some place. Well I set up some interviews for last Monday. The very first place I went the Director of Nursing offered me a full time position during the interview. Wow. I was estatic. My first day was yesterday for orientation. I think I am going to like working there. The only draw back I see right now is that it is about 1 to 1 1/4 hours commute each way. That is something new for me. I never had to travel very far to any of my other jobs. I am so excited about the opportunities that are opening up for me as part of my new lease on life. While I was at work yesterday a woman approached me and said can I ask you a question I heard you talking earlier and did I hear you say that you had gastric bypass? Turns out that she is post op 10 years and looks fantastic. She is doing great and has no problems other than low blood sugar. It was so nice to talk to her and know that I have found yet another person who understands. She looks fantastic and I am looking forward to getting to know her much better.
Congrats on the new job. Sounds great with the exception of the commute. There is definetly something to be said when you have a friend you work with that is going through the same thing. I have not had my surgery yet. But my best friend, who works in my office, had her surgery on 5/12. We are constantly talking about her progress and problems. It's great to have someone to compiserate (spelling?) with. That's also why we are here, on OH. Good luck to you and your new job.

Wow! That is amazing! I am so happy for you! And having someone around you - who is not only someone who has walked in your shoes, but is still successing after all these years should be quite an inspiration....conratulations and hopefully this is the first of MANY more wonderful things to come to you!
AWESOME!!! Congrats!!! I could never EVER be a staffing nurse....for all the same reasons you mentioned. I give you all the credit in the world for doing that, especially as your first job in such a long while!
And, nice to know you made a contact, too. 10 years, huh? Tell her to come on over here and shed some light for the rest of us!

Wow, congratulations!
The commute is something you can just make the best of. I've had long commutes at various points in my career. Use your crock pot at home, and set up meals ahead as much as possible (chopping, marinating, or whatever). Assign one or two nights for hubby and/or kids to be totally responsible for dinner (make it, buy it, get it at grandma's, or whatever!) Grab some books on CD from your library, or discover what radio stations appeal to you most at your drive times. Or make the drive your quiet thinking time.
And yes, it would be great to hear some pointers from your new friend and co worker!

Congratulations on the new job!! That's awesome - the commute doesn't sound pleasant but if the job is good that will help a lot - Mine is pretty ugly too but the job and the people are great so that helps a lot. Eventually you'll get used to it - just makes for long days sometimes.
WOW - a 10 year vet?? You'll have to invite her onto the boards so we can all meet her and share in her successing - I don't know anyone who's that far out - that's awesome!!
Congratulations again on the new job - I think that is one of the biggest benefits gained with having bypass - not hiding behind ourselves now and all our fluffiness - putting ourselves out there because we're not afraid we're going to be ridiculed or laughed at now.

Congrats on the job! I commuted for 2 years to Baltimore City. It was my quiet time. I listened to relaxing music, books on CD and sometimes just used the time to reflect on my day.
