Since we can't take NSAIDS...

This is a sort of "after the fact" question but it persists:

2 weeks ago I strained my knee during a trainer session. I didn't take Tylenol right away, but eventually did the following:

Extra Strength Tylenol every 4 hrs. - by the clock
Massage therapy
Knee brace (still wearing it just in case)
Heat treatments
Took a break from all weight bearing exercise for 1 week - limited exercise for 1 week.

It took a FULL 2 weeks to feel better. The massage therapist said it was not joint damage or some of his work would have hurt more than it did. At times the knee felt like it could "go out" on me.

I'm sure that my PCP would have - pre op - recommended Advil.

How have you handled similar exercise injuries without NSAIDS?

I have been using Tylenol Arthritis strength got that little extra kick and well Den is further out but when he strained his back he did take Nsaids (aleve) I made sure he took it with food and for a limited time only.

I will say I miss my Nsaids more then sugar

I have been taking 600 mg of advil 3 times a day for 2 weeks now for my knee and hip.  I haven't mentioned it to Dr. Brader yet because I haven't seen him.  I know I am in a different situation because I have the band but I can tell you I am having more reflux because of it.

You can't measure your achievements with someone else's yardstick!

Well, hind site 20/20 the rest, ice etc probably should have been started immediately.

I have taken NSAIDS before...I take them with food and also go on a pepcid regimine for the time I'm on them and for a day or so afterward..that is what Pupkova reccommended to me if I absolutely MUST take them (I use it sparingly)

Otherwise it's basically the "rice" method

Rest
Ice
Compression (ace/brace etc)
Elevate

Glad you are feeling better!

When I broke my foot last year, I was introduced to Ultram,  or Tramadol, the generic.  I have used it for my herniated discs,  as well.  I went to the ER about a month ago with the disc pain, because I had run out of my Tramadol, and the poor doc looked at me when I said, "I can't take NSAIDs, and I can't take Narcotics, so I know I have tied your hands."  I can only take the Tramadol, and it helps.  It is a prescription.
