OT - Amelia's Birth Story

Ok - For those of you who want to know all the details of her birth here it is! I actually typed it out late sunday night because I don't want to forget anything about it.

Well Amelia is peacefully sleeping in the nursery and I've had at least 6 hours of sleep tonight so of course it's 5:15 and I am wide awake - figured I'd tell our story.

I woke up sunday night around 1:30 to go to the bathroom and I was laying there for a minute and heard this weird noise. Well I immediately thought that it was my water breaking for some reason, got up out of bed and barely made it to the bathroom and sure enough here it comes. I had 1 contraction while I was still in there and it was all in  my back just like the last few days so I went into take a hot shower (sitting on my up-side-down bucket seat in the shower). Well the contractions started coming fast and furious - anywhere from 4-8 minutes and intense as anything. Got out of the shower, woke Chris, called my Mom and the OB - he told me to head for the hospital - by this point it's about 3am. we get to the hospital just before 4am by the time we get up to the room and all - nurse gets us all hooked up etc - and checks me  - 4cm dilated. She proceeds to tell me that since I am a first time Mom I am looking at a good 6 hours before we start to push, that women dilate about a CM an hour. Alright well contractions are getting worse so I get the epidural - god love the person who invented that!! It was NOTHING going in and gave me almost total relief in about 10 minutes. I still knew I was having contractions but I was able to relax and enjoy everything. So about 6:30 I mention to my Mom that I feel "squishy" she checks and I am bleeding pretty good. Just so happens that the OB and the nurse come in at that moment. They are surprised to see it - figured it was just more water. Well the OB checks me and I am 10cm! He was shocked and told me I’d be holding my baby by 8am – well he was wrong lol.  So they are flying around getting things ready for baby, pushing etc.
I start to push and am doing great according to the nurse (who was fantastic). Well baby has to “twist" their head to get around my pelvic bone so after 45 minutes of pushing they want me to take a break and allow nature to work for a bit, then we go into round 2 of pushing – same thing, making some progress but baby has something stuck on my pelvic bone. 45 minutes later we take another break I am in so much lower back pain that they give me a second dose of the epidural (I ended up getting 2 “boosters" along the way). Well at this point I ask the Dr if we are going to need to help baby get “un-stuck" he agrees and we ended up using the vacuum. After that was brought out 4 pushes and she was here! OB thinks that her shoulder was stuck on my pelvic bone. I had a very minor episiotomy that only required 2 stitches. Amelia Ranee was born at 11:21 am, 8 pounds, 21" long. They put her right on my belly and it was love at first sight! They kept telling me all along that they could see her long dark hair in the birth canal – well turns out she’s a red head like Mommy! It’s a darker red but red none the less! She LOVES to be snuggled and suck on her hands – I think that she is going to be a thumb sucker.   I did have some issues during delivery too with my blood pressure dropping a bit low so they had to give me something to bring that back up along with many bags of IV fluids. After I was moved to my regular room (labor and delivery in one room then I get moved to another room) I was running a little bit of a fever – 100.7 so they gave me extra fluids and decided that it was a combination of dehydration, lack of sleep and blood loss. I ended up with a migraine sunday night too – nothing a little Tylenol 3 can’t cure!
Daddy fell in love with her at first sight as did my Mom – it was so awesome having her in there with us, she was awesome support and I can’t imagine having done it without her!

There are TONS of pics on facebook (Liz Hill Radlbeck or

I am so happy for you all.  You suffered through the seemingly endless days up to all out labor.  Why do they wait until the middle of the night to come full force???

Anyway, she is here and in no time you will have forgotten all the pain you went through.

She is beautiful and is blessed with awesome parents, family, and extended family.
