For the first time in 11 days I am actually feeling hungry,,,I think,,,,,lots of growling and rumbling!!!!
Ipureed and egg for breakfast,,had 6oz yogurt with protein powder for snack,a shake for lunch .and have been drinking all day....Do I have to puree the cottage cheese?(small curd?)  I really feel like I need some substance not runny!       ps This USED to be Happy Hour......maybe I'll have a V-8!!!!!!!

I'd be REAL surprised if it was true hunger.  Rumblings and growling don't necessarily mean "hungry", it just means your intestines are working and moving stuff around...True hunger "normally" doesn't come back for a few months minimum.

I don't think you would need to puree the cottage cheese....I would mix it with a spoon at the very least.

How long did it take you to eat the 6 ounces of yogurt?  Everyone is different...I know I wouldn't have been able to finish 6 ounces so early out.  I'm NOT saying you are doing something wrong or that something is wrong with your pouch, so don't freak :)

Enjoy the cottage cheese.  I'd stay awy from the v-8...not much protein and there is a lot of natural sugars in that.  Generally speaking you won't dump from that, but you could.

The doc cut the nerves when he made your pouch.  It takes a while for them to come back.  Your pouch is reacting to the slider foods you are eating (soft foods) and you are hearing your intestines.  You may be having a little head hunger, and that is normal.  Sounds like you are doing great!

Just remember, be patient, things will contiue to improve, you will lose weight and everything!!!

Good Luck

I'm 7 weeks out and have only been what I call mentally hungry. I'm mostly nauseated and can hardly eat, but still am not hungry

I had something similar early out and found that the little pang I was feeling was better when I drank something.  I cannot say it was hunger but I know I felt pangs.  Whatever it was called... liquid helped.

Your fears are normal.  Everyone believes that this won't work for them.  Hang in there.  The weight comes off.  You didn't put in on in a week and you won't take it all off in a week :)

No, your pouch is not "holding" to much.  I asked the time question about the 6 ounces...over 35mins seems about right.

3 oz of cottage cheese and sf pudding sounds fine :)

Keep getting in your protein, fluids, etc and give yourself time.

And the same thing for feeling full goes about feeling hungry - your nerves were cut.  You will not truly feel "hungry" or "full" for a little while.  That's why it's important to eat by the clock and eat by amount (weights measurements etc) for the first few months out.

You will find you "signal" that you are full.

Doing great!

Your are doing fine.  I had no problem with 6 oz of yogurt over a period of time, no problem drinking constantly, etc.  I never felt any restriction on slider foods but definitely felt it on solids when they started.  Since the nerves are cut it is very important to measure and keep within your doctor's and nut's guidelines.  Just keep working the tool and you will be fine.

I weighed 296 the morning of surgery.  I left the hospital 14 pounds heavier because of the fluid.  Today, 2 weeks from my 6 month anniversary, I weigh 222.  Try not to stress over the scale-- I admit I weighed 4-5 times a day I think (well at least 3) the first month or two.  Now I restrict myself to once a week at the gym.

For those of you who think you are feeling "hunger" at this point (less than 3 months out of surgery), I'd like to pose a challenge...

You KNOW that it's physically impossible for you to feel true hunger... hunger defined as the feeling generated from an empty stomach when one needs to take in nutrients.  Until the nerves grow back that were cut in surgery, the signals simply cannot get from the stomach to the brain.  Period.

SO... what you are feeling must be one or more of the following (the challenge follows in a minute - trust me...):
*  Gas pains or movement from the intestines (your intestines still have attached and intact nerves).  This may be leftover gas from your surgery (if you're within a few weeks - took me about 3 weeks to fully get rid of all the abdominal gas) or may be gasses or extra movement generated by your primarily liquid diet.
*  Psychological or "head" hunger (which feels COMPLETELY real) generated by your mind reacting to the triggers it used to react to to cause you to eat
*  Twinges in the region of abdominal muscles (deep muscles) as they heal and work themselves out of the trauma of surgery

THE CHALLENGE
For the next few days - EVERY time you THINK you feel hunger, stop what you're doing and look around you.  Write down every "food stimulus" that is in your immediate vicinity (even if you were not consciously aware of it before this exercise).  Food stimuli include:  smells, TV/radio ads, magazine ads with pics of food, family members or others discussing food, a pet eating, where you are standing (in the kitchen?), what you are doing (watching a movie where you always munch on snacks?), how you feel (bored? anxious?)...    You don't need to make a big deal of it - just carry a little notebook or have a paper handy to do it.

At the end of that time, look over your list for commonalities and triggers.  The "onesies" of events that had literally no food trigger involved were likely gas.  But you're likely to see some trends - like 5 of the events happened while watching TV or just after a tense situation at work.

This is a way of starting to get a handle on your emotional eating triggers - if you can view this time as a "training ground" where you can clearly get your head around the NON-physical reasons that you eat, your job later once those nerves grow back will be easier.  You'll have the insights you need to be able to analyze yourself and say "Am I really hungry, or am I grazing because I'm upset?"  And many of those things (like TV ads) will lose all or some of their power over you once you are conscious of them.

Hope this helps!
