Lehigh Valley Hospital- Looking for a Surgeon
Hi. I live in Pottstown, PA
I'm trying to find a good surgeon for laparoscopic RNY gastric bypass surgery.
Can anyone suggest one or tell me about your recent (past year or two) experience.
My mom lives in Allentown and will help me after surgery so I was considering the Lehigh Valley Hospital since its near by. Or should I stick with the hospitals in Philly?
Please let me know if you have any insight. PLEASE
Thanks for your time reading my post.
Hi There- Thanks so much for responding. My mom had general surgery performed by Dr. Boorse. She actually recommended me to him. She said he was just getting into the Bariatric field; this was about 5-8 years ago. I wasn’t sure if I should consider him because I wasn’t sure about how extensive his experience was in this field. So you were very happy with him? He knew obviously what he was doing? Sorry I know that probably sounds bad but I wasn’t sure.
Thanks so much for the recommendation. I think I will try to schedule an appointment tomorrow with his office. The website wasn’t clear so I wasn’t sure if he was one of the surgeons doing the rny surgery.
Thanks again. Let me know if you can think of any other info about him.
I now work at LVH as an RN I did not have surgery through their program (prior to my employment) but I can tell you that ANYONE who has had Boorse, for WLS or otherwise, has loved him. I work in the ER @ Cedar Crest and hear his praises often.
I went through Barix in Langhorne Pa. And although it's a bit of a drive (I actually commuted there from Jersey at time of surgery) I loved the facility, the doctor (Pupkova), the nurses, the before care, the after care, it was all UNBELIEVABLE!! Like I said...I'm a nurse so impressing me can be a little difficult.
Either one,, I think you'll be just fine with :)

Hi!!! I live in Pottstown as well!
I had my surgery 6 years ago in Allentown, at Sacred Heart. My surgeon was Dr. Sawyna. He was a very good surgeon but is lacking somewhat in long term after care.
At this point, I would recommend St. Lukes in Allentown. Dr. Clarence Holland. He was once at SHH as well, and was in the OR with my Dr. to assist. I have heard nothing but great things about him.
Also, Phoenixville Hospital, which is not too far from Pottstown, now does RNY as well.
Good Luck!! :)

St Lukes has an outstanding surgery team. The WLS is done at the Allentown Campus.

I can wholeheartedly second Pam's recommendation of Dr. Pupkova at Barix in Langhorne. Here's why... She's an amazing and extremely experienced surgeon who ONLY does laparascopic RNY. She's a world-class doc, with world-class surgery statistics... she's also a warm person, excellent communicator, and extremely careful. She ran into some unexpected complications with my surgery and went well "above the call of duty" in exploring and resolving things - far beyond what an average surgeon would have done, which enabled me to avoid costly and painful followup surgery just to explore an issue.
What I liked about the Barix experience is this... because they specialize in bariatric surgery, everyone you encounter is knowledgeable and experienced in exactly what you're dealing with, both pre and post surgery. You won't have "ignorant questions" or have to educate your nurse as to what you can/can't do or have. They have the process down to a science. You'll also not be on a hospital floor with people who are "sick" or have had orthopedic procedures or whatever... which made me feel better for germ-control. Everyone you meet as other patients will have had very similar experiences and you'll be making lifelong friendships for the journey as you do your walking laps of the upstairs facility. Finally, their support network is amazing - from support groups and forums, handouts (the barix bible) and online resources, to all the people involved, the nutritionists, and nurses... It was a fantastic experience for me. There were so many benefits to Barix that I didn't anticipate pre-surg, because they had really thought of everything!
We have people who travel 2 - 3 hours to come to the first saturday meetings and wouldn't dream of missing them. That's the type of value that they get from the support groups at Barix.
I hope this helps! Good luck as you continue your journey and we're here for any questions that arise.
