Do we (RNY'ers) get flu type illnesses?
I've been wondering, since I hang with kids all day, do I still get illnesses like before? Would I puke from the flu like before? Would I get illnesses that grow in your stomach like before since everything empties so much quicker?
Surely, I would get the fever, chills, aches, etc...
Last night I woke up at 3am with sever cramping in my - my - okay, intestines for lack of a better description. The area below the belly button.
I was up again at 4 praying for the intestinal gods to grant me leniency. My wishes were granted, and I felt better.
I didn't know if it was that turkey meatball I ate that was still sealed and in the fridge, but past the date (can't believe I ate it, that's my OCD meds working)...or was it that sugar free bite of toffee I ate right before I went to bed on an empty stomach (malitol)...or was it the flu? (one of my daycare kids had the flu last week...always on the lookout...that's my OCD)
I really could use a day off, so I was actually wishing for the flu, but, alas, I am fine now.

It can be both. While there isn't much to vomit (and it isn't nearly as horrible as it was pre-op because we don't have stomach acid) we do still vomit (some people - others well just can't anymore). So dry heaves or the foamies - where you basically throw up foam - are what you have to look forward to.
The severe intestinal cramping (feels like a knife stabbing you from the inside out) was more likely the maltitol if was not accompanied by any fever or vomiting. Basically, it's just really sharp gas and should pass eventually like all gas does ;-).
With vomiting AND cramping, though, you should call your doctor ALWAYS (with me, those symptoms last month indicated acute appendicitis, even without fever) just in case.
There's no reason why you can't get illnesses like before - they may just have slightly different symptoms. You can absolutely get food poisoning, too.
I know that i have a MUCH harder time vomiting than I did pre-surg - it's a lot of "work" and a much more physically demanding process. But when your body wants/needs to do it, it's gonna happen in some form.
Hope you feel better!

Can you get sick? Absolutely. Virus and bacteria are just that...and don't care what your insides look like.
NOW...can you physically vomit? That depends on the individual. I have physically been able to vomit 2 times since surgery. The other times I just feel incredibly nauseous, and have been known to dry heave for what seems like hours.
I have noticed that with "stomach bugs" when I can't vomit, at some point or another it comes out the other end.....with cramping right beforehand.

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses. ![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/thumbsup2.gif)
