Not eating right

I've had massive nausea and vomiting and acid reflux, so I have NOT been eating right.  Today I had 1 package of Carnation Instant Breakfast drink (recommended by the nutritionist) and some zucchini.  I do not know how to get protein.  Is protein powder flavorless (obviously the ones that aren't vanilla and stuff) and so able to be put in anything? TIA for your replies.

While not completely flavorless, the unflavored (like unjury) can be put in just about anything - some of them have heat restrictions thoug.  I even put it in sugar free pudding (sometimes I put the flavored ones in too... ) if you are able to handle that.  I have used the vanilla in which orange crystal light and have made decaf chai tea with the vanilla protein and made a chai latte.  have you tried protein shakes other than carnation Instant breakfast?

I'm thinking I was on mushy foods at this point. I pureed roast turkey breast and froze them in ice cube trays. I could nuke 2 of them at each meal, some mashed potatoes (one ice cube worth) w/ fat free gravy.

I use unjury brand in flavorless protein powder. The powder can be added to the mashed potatoes (altho- it's not truly flavorless). I added it to tomato soup. It can also be added to potato soup, bean w/ bacon soup...any soup you prefer that's low in fat and of course sugar.

The flavorless unjury tends to make a clear type soup creamy in appearance. So, I prefer adding it to the soups I've listed.

You could eat yogurt and I add wheat germ. 2T. of wheat germ = 4g protein. (Dannon Light and Fit is the best one as far as nutrient requirements that I have found.)

I hope some of these help.

Oh, and check out the cottage cheese recipe post right below yours. I got a brand with 14g protein in one serving. You can blend them or if the curd is small enough, maybe you wont need to worry about it. Also, ricotta cheese could be eaten mixed with various mix-ins. I haven't done that one, but, other people have mentioned it.

You didn't say how the zucchini was made when you ate it, but at this point in your post-op I would think that would be too much for your system to handle. Did your surgeon or nut give you guidelines as how to incorporate food back into your diet? Even now at over 2 years out there are some fruits and veggies that give me trouble.

Carnation Instant Breakfast (regular) does have a lot of sugar and that may be causing your nauseau - dumping - so be very careful with that - most RNY'ers at least early out have trouble with sugar - I still cannot tolerate it except in very small amounts.

I use the Matrix protein powders - favs are chocolate, vanilla and the flavorless is actually very flavorless - I mix it in low sugar flavored oatmeal - that should be something you can eat - or mix it in cottage cheese, yogurt (but again, WATCH the sugar content in yogurt) - most of us eat the unflavored greek yogurts and flavor them with sf syrup or sf jelly - things like that.

At this point you should be getting in close to your protein goals - the nauseau and vomiting are definitely signs of dumping so it appears you may be consuming way too much sugar - at this point you shouldn't eat anything with more than 2-3 grams of sugar in it.

Go back to your nutritionist or surgeon and ask them questions about your diet and what you should or should not be eating at this point - I would think a lot of vomiting and acid reflux is not good for your new pouch.

Take care and keep us posted on your progress.

I'd recommend Anywhey.

It's as close to true flavorless as I've ever found.

I am sorry to hear that you are having difficulty.  Are you taking your Prilosec?  That should help some with the acid.

For my protein I am eating:

Yogurt (greek or fat free light), ff or 2% cottage cheese, chili, light string cheese, Babybel Light (yum) cheese, turkey meatballs cooked with a little low-sugar red sauce, lean thin sliced deli meats, chicken, beans (all kind of them! soft cooked), peas, and IsoPure Whey Protein. My protein shake mix is Strawberry. I have made it with skim milk and also with SF FF chocolate pudding (yum).

The wheat germ is also a great idea.  I put it on my cheesecake flavored SF FF Jell-o pudding and it is such a treat!  (Like the graham cracker crust of the kind that we should not have!)

I have also had some Chunky soups that I blended a little to make them less broth...more "mushy meats and veggies."  I look for the lower fat, higher protein varieties.

Good luck.  I will keep you in my prayers.  I know you will turn this around soon!!

Rebecca

Thank you guys for all the great suggestions. One challenge for me is that I don't really do dairy - no cottage cheese, cheese or yogurt. This makes things tricky. But I'm going to try some protein powder and some wheat germ. I'll keep you all posted. Happy weekend!

My concern is the nausea in general.  Have you been nauscious since the surgery or is this a new symptom?  If it's new...A) go back to the last diet stage you were on and see how you make out from there.  B)  Call your doc and let them know

As far as foods are concerned...what stage are you at?  Are you on regular diet now?  If I remember your date right...you are about 6 weeks out?

We'd be better able to help you decide on protein if we know stage of food your on

Thanks for your post, Pam. You are correct, I'm at about 6 weeks and I'm in my "experimental" phase where I'm adding more regular food but keeping the fat and sugar down. I have had nausea from day 1 and my surgeon had to spend about 30 minutes cutting out scar tissue from around my Pancreas after a 2007 bout of Pancreatitis. I did see the surgeon yesterday (with my husband who is 3 months with diet now on his way through the program), and he said that I could possibly be developing more scar tissue around the Pancreas and so it may be pinching around the re-routed intestine causing acid build-up. He stated he has sometimes had to have people scoped to cut out more scar tissue post-op. I have trouble with acid reflux (SERIOUS acid coming up) and lots of nausea. The surgeon stated that my low liquid intake (I admit I'm not able to drink enough) and my lower protein intake (I'm only getting about 45 grams a day) could also be contributing to the nausea.

I think it's a good idea to go back to a previous stage of food and see how I tolerate that for a while. I'm going back to softer foods and lots of soup to build up my fluids.

Thank you again for all the assistance and if you can think of anything I'm missing please let me know. ~Laura
