Question on blood test results for WLS patients

Hi
I am about 4 years out and would like to know if anyone has experienced the following.

I took my annual blood tests and they came back good except for the following.   (Very low B12; very low Vit D, and High Blood Calcium).

So far I got my B12 and Vit D under control or so I think they are... I will find out more next week, but my Calcium is still high and just would like to know if anyone else has had this experience this.

Thank a bunch...
Misty

I suffer from chronicly low B12 so I hear ya there - try the nasal spray or shots if what you are doing isn't cutting it.

As far as the calcium no idea - I'd say back of the supplements and see what happens. Hopefully Pam (Our resident RN) will jump in with a better answer

Hi!  I'm the resident RN previously mentioned :)  Hmm.  The ELEVATED blood calcium is actually throwing me.   I KNOW I learned something about it years and years ago in school...not necessarily related to WLS.  What is "high"?  If it's just a little higher than normal I don't think it's a big deal....

the biggest "normal" concern for calcium is if it is low.  That's because your body can "fool" you.  IE, if your blood calcium is low, it will steal it from your bones, making it APPEAR normal when really it isn't.

Oh...and high calcium...the thing that just came to me as I was sitting here typing and thinking is that you are *probably* more at risk for calcium carbonate kidney stones.

I'd ask your surgeon/md about it just to be sure.

The vit D....I was also very low on it and needed to start taking sublingual therapy - and that brought me up nicely.

The vit b12 also HAS to be taken either subligually or injection or nasal swab for us to absorb properly.  If you just take it in a regular tablet, you won't absorb it

Let us know how it goes next week!

Thanks so much for the come back.... I know at one point my Endocrinologist was talking about parathyroid surgery. He said I have secondary hyperparathyroidism, but does not give me a reason why my blood calcium is high; just says to think about surgery.   Everything I read said that parathyroid surgery is dangerous.... I think before I would get any surgery, I need to find a parathyroid specialist and would like to know what caused my calcium to be so high. I believe it is at 10.1. I will make sure what my readings are later this week, so I can post the right ones.   As far as my kidneys - they found lesions on both of them and a small kidney stone. My Urologist said we need to watch and take another (cat scan) next year. I was told that during the operation, the doctor may have damaged my kidneys some what with the lap scopes that were used. Don't know if this is true or not.....     I was also told I have a turmor on both of my Adernal glands that need to be watched via a yearly (catscan) and if they get larger, surgery is needed... I feel like I am falling apart since I had this operation.   Thanks again Misty

Update:  Results of my blood tests are that I am sitll Vit D deficient - So I am on another round of Vit D for eight weeks and of course, more blood tests.

I get my Vit B-12 checked next week.

Thanks so much for all your help and for listening to me.

I hear ya - but it is NOT the surgery fault.  I'd be VERY surprised if the lap damaged your kidneys...they would have had to go through all your intestines and what not....very difficult to do...your kidneys are in your back and the lap is done in front.  Not saying it's not possible....but

Now...parathyroid and what not...DEFINATELY go see an endocrinologist.  I didn't realize you had thyroid/parathyroid problems.  The endocrinologist will be best able to answer your questions, talk to you about surgery, WHY you need surgery etc.  The thyroid/parathyroid can definately create havok on your system and needs to be taken care of.

Let us know what's going on!
