Sushi???

 Hi everyone,
Well, here I am, tomorrow I will be 2 weeks post-op and I am 33 pounds lighter!  I still can't believe it - and I feel wonderful!  I was so scared that recovery was going to be difficult, I definitely attribute my smooth recovery to constant walking and moving.  I am getting my water and protein in, and Wednesday I am supposed to start soft foods.  The one food that I miss terribly is sushi, and my DH is patiently waiting for me to be able to have it again.  Here is my question - for you sushi eaters, how long after RNY were you able to eat sushi again?  Would you consider it to be a soft food?  Did you make any changes to the rice or is there a rice alternative?
   Thanks!

I would call Barix and ask the nutritionist since sushi is raw , you probably wont be able to tolerate the rice yet

Hi Holly,

I'm a sushi fanatic and it's really the perfect post-op food as it's so high in protein and low in fat.  I considered it a soft food and it worked nicely for me at that stage (tuna and salmon, particularly, as they are so tender).  As Susan said, check with your nutritionist/doc as to when it's ok to add back in.

You'll need to go with sashimi, not sushi, and eventually go with a tiny bit of brown rice instead of white (on the side) if you must have rice.  I typically get edamame (steamed soy beans) and sashimi, with spicy sauce.  Miso soup is also really good in the early stages.

An added benefit - since I'm sticking with sashimi, I've gotten more "adventurous" in trying new types of fish, such as red snapper sashimi, to vary flavors more instead of varying the flavors with rice and high-fat sauces and such.  Found some things I really like, that I hadn't expected!

Enjoy!
