Hello everyone - You all gave me such a warm welcome when I first came out of "lurker" status I wanted to give you a quick update.  I've decided to have the RNY @ Jefferson and scheduled all of my pre-op appts a few weeks ago.  The first one is Monday and the and the last one is 4/15.  I hope to have the procedure by the end of May if all goes according to plan.  I already have documented failure of a medically supervised diet within the past year so I hope I don't have to do the medically supervised diet that BC/BS PC has people do.  It would be such a disappointment to have to wait an additional 3-6 months.  Will keep you all posted and thanks again for your support.  --Carol

Hi Carol!

Medical plans vary, but I have Personal Choice and didn't have to do a supervised diet.  Good luck with the process!  Keep us posted on how things are going!

Good luck Carol
Just dont give up if you have to wait longer. It took me more than 6 mos and it was well worth the wait! I actually feel like I was better prepared after the first 4 mos. This board is a gigantic help!

Carol, just be sure right from the get go that you know ALL of your insurance requirements. If you know what they are, you can click them off. If they keep coming at you our of nowhere, it takes forever.

Congrats on getting the ducks in a row!

Congrats!  Glad to hear it!

Funny  you should mention "coming out of your lurker status" the first time...cause I saw this post and your avatar and said to myself "hmmm, that avatar looks familiar...who is she again?"  LOL

I do hope everything goes according to plan - and it would be a pain for the insurance company to require you to re do the diet - but I don't put ANYTHING past them...so prepare yourself for worst case scenario and be ESTATIC if it happens sooner!

What tests are you having done?

LOL - I really don't like my avatar or username.  Will hopefully change both when feeling more confident.

Tests:
monday - pulmonary function
tuesday - labs
weds - psych eval
friday - sleep doctor appt
4/15 - cardiology

I think that's it.  I know I'm overly excited and optimistic.  Surprisingly I am pretty healthy for someone who's morbidly obese (good genes) but just so frustrated with my weight getting higher by the minute and feeling so awful physically.

Your avatar I like....your screen name....you will like it even less and less when it is NOT true anymore.

Don't worry about the psych eval - *most* of them are BS anyway in my humble opinion
And if your sleep study went anything like mine did...even though I didn't need to be put on cpap I didn't sleep real well - so don't make to many plans for the next day, lol

So...plans for thursday, LOL?  Your whole week is appointments :)

Hi Carol,

Congrats on your decision and moving forward with your appointments.  Hopefully, the insurance thing will go well.

Just a caution.  The insurance company may not be looking for a FAILURE of a medically-supervised diet.  They may be looking to see if you can be a compliant patient and succeed on a medically supervised diet.  Going into my surg approval, mine required a 6 month diet with at least 3 nutritionist visits and monthly doc appts.  I clarified with them (and with my surgeon's insurance office, who was a HUGE help in negotiating through things)... because my fear was that they would say "Look - she lost X pounds on that diet, so instead of approving surgery, she should just stay on the diet."  Nope - they were looking to see that I was capable of being a compliant patient.  So don't shoot yourself in the foot accidentally if that issue comes up.  Check with what your insurance company is REALLY looking for.

Additionally, even if it happens that you DO have to wait extra time, you can use that time to start an exercise program (even just walking regularly) and drop what weight you can pre-surg.  That will make your post-surg recovery so much easier and quicker.  You can also use the time to "re-educate" your cooking and nutrition and such to get a jump-start on things.

We're happy to have you here - and hang in there.  It will all come together.
