OT - Philly

Alright all my philly friends...

I'm half toying with the idea of going to Philly tomorrow (or today depending on when you read this...)  There's a bunch of factors that come into play so I'm not real sure if it will come to be or not.

But...if it does (or even if it doesn't, for future ideas) what are some cool things to check out, preferably indoors considering the weather?

Any specific areas we should go to?  Any specific areas we should NOT go to, lol

Two days in the rain...and I think it's cabin fever setting in.

ooooh - was just looking on the web and realized the parade is tomorrow.  Perhaps not the best day to be trying to go in and out of the city?

Hmmmm

Hi Pam,
I live in center city and it is just as nasty and miserable here as everywhere else...tommorow I think we are supposed to have some breaks in the rain...as far as the parade is concerned I don't think it runs that late and it doesn't make it that difficult to get around.  As far as what to do, I guess that depends on what you like, and the weather.  I live next door to the art museum and I love walking on Kelly Drive and watching the crew folks at this time of year.  The art museum also is free on Sunday so you could always do that (maybe a bit later once the parade is over), then of course there is the Franklin Institute, which is great too.  You could walk around Rittenhouse square (there is a great BArnes and Noble there, I love to hang out, read books grab tea/coffee), or if you are a shopper there are all those awesome shops on Walnut street....
Not sure if any of this would be something you are interested in.  I don't think the weather will cooperate unfortunately :(....there is also Olde City, but that is mostly resturants....
Over by University city I understand they have a neat new move theatre as well as a great bowling place...
Not sure if  helped ...I hope the weather cooperates for you!

Pam,

Ok, it might be a bit of a busman's holiday for you and not sure how Brian likes this sort of thing, but the Mutter Museum (of the College of Physicians of Philadlephia) is totally awesome.  www.collphyphil.org/INDEX.ASP

The other thing is that Body Worlds 2 is at the Franklin Institute.  It's really cool -  www2.fi.edu/bodyworlds2/  We saw the first one with the whole family and even the kids (who think things like that are gross) were totally fascinated.  Very artistic and very amazingly rendered.

And the Art Museum is always a great place to go in town, even more so with the new wing open.  And they now have self-guided podcasts that you can download to your ipod from their website, so you don't have to rent those goofy headsets if you want a guided tour of some of the exhibits.  philamuseum.org/

All of those destinations would be out of the way of the parade route.  And Philly's parade isn't quite as much of a city-wide bit of out-of-control hoopla as NY's or Chicago's or Boston's... so you should be cool.

On that side of town, if you want to have a nice dinner, head down toward Walnut St, and you have a ton of great choices, from Rittenhouse square east to Broad st.

Have a GREAT day!  Should be fun!

I was going to say what Karen said about the Franklin Institute - I was just there yesterday fr the Body World's Exhibit - I loved it - but  I am NOT a medical professional - but it was REAL cool!  Tons of stuff to see and talk about.  And the rest of the museum is awesome!  And of course - visiting with the Belitsky's in the northeast is always an option - we are taking Joshua and the kids to bowl and laser tag for his birthday.  Then dinner at Red Robin - LOVE their chili! :)

Ditto to all of the above.  The Franklin Institute is an awesome trip no matter what is on exhibit.  Definitely worth it.

Not sure about the parade.

Have fun.

Thanks guys!  As always - full of GREAT ideas!

We saw body worlds 2 with the brain (I believe that's the same one that is still open) in Baltimore...but the rest of the museum stuff sounds cool...

I'll have to see once hubby gets up!

I love the Rittenhouse Square area - and the big Anthropologie store there (the flagship store, I think), as well as B&N (much better than Borders on Broad).

I saw Bodyworlds I - and wow! It's worth the price of a ticket if you care to see the human body in a whole new way. Actually, I went with a friend who is a nurse, and we both really enjoyed it.

Browse through the shops at the Park Hyatt - Origins, Williams Sonoma, etc. - and take in the original tiles and cool architecture.

There's always the historic area, if it's decent enough weather to walk down.

I've never walked Fairmont Park or Kelly Drive, but it's on my list. But from the sound of the rain hitting my roof, it may be too wet to enjoy that today.

A little late and don't know what you did, but the Constitution Center is a great museum and is right in the middle of the historical stuff (Betsy Ross House, Independence Mall,  Franklin's print shop, etc)  Also if the weather is nice (r) you can walk up to Reading Terminal Market from here.  A cool place to have lunch and meander around.  Saturady is better than Sunday because the Amish are there.
