Lactose intolerent

For those of you who this has happened to after surgery- does it ever go away?

I used to be able to eat yogurt but now it has gotten to the point I can do NO dairy at all.  Do they make lactose free yogurt somewhere?  I need to get the calcium and protein in.  I use the Lactaid milk but that does not have a lot.  And even taking the pills with my first bite like they suggest does not help.

I am lactose intolerant post-op 3+ years now and it hasn't gotten any better. I'd say it has something to do with how we are "re-wired" and I don't expect it to go away unfortunately. Yogurt shouldn't bother you because the lactose is actually "dead" the cooking process kills it - same with cheese. I use soy milk for everything now, and yes, they do make soy yogurts. I know Giant has them in the oraganic section.

As for calcium you should be supplementing - 1200mg a day. I take caltrate +D.

Good luck!

Hi!

I am also Lactose Intolerant post surgery. I am 5 and a half years out, so I would say it doesn't change. I can eat cheese. I don't do yogurt because even the small amount of sugat content in that, makes me sick. So......I have just adjusted my life to using lactaid or soy milk.

It does cause some difficulty in cooking with items that contain sour cream or don't do well with substitute milks but I have just tested, lived and learned over the years to adapt certain things.

The pills to "help" with lactose intolerance are junk in my opinion.

As far as I am concerned, it's just another lifestyle change some of us have and you just deal with it. Sorry you were one of the ones who got this side effect.

I do supplement.  I just like to get lots of nutrients from my foods too...I usually don't eat it if it is not going to benefit me.  I know yogurt must have something in it because it goes straight through me...straight!  And I don't think it's the natural sugars because it did not do it until the lactose started bothering me.  I would love a spoon of the no sugar added ice cream I used to eat but it's not worth it LOL

Bryers makes a lactose free ice cream. Sugar content is 13 gms per half of a cup. Since that much sugar makes me ill, I just enjoy a 1/4 and it satisfies me.

Johnny just found this for me last wee****il then, no lactose free ice cream was available at any stores near me that didn't have a ton of sugar. So I literally didn't have ice cream for YEARS until last week. The container will probably go bad before I can get through it. Since I only eat a tiny bit at a time. And just because I can have a little, I will not allow myself to eat it everyday.

We've had it over a week and I have had some twice. LOL

oohh I think I love Johnny! lol I am going to have to look for this! The only ice cream I get is when I make it myself and it just isn't the same. I hate to say since I am preggo I would probably be OK with the 13 grams of sugar (I can eat candy now - it's scary!) but I will stick to 1/2 a serving too. Shouldn't push my luck

I am only partly lactose intolerant.  I was before surgery too, though.   I can eat SF ice creams with no problem.  I can also do yogurts and most cheeses.  Cottage cheese and sour cream bother me.. greek yogurt bothered me right after surgery, but seems to be ok now.

Nobody ever said I was normal.

When I am using milk for shakes or coffee, I use soy.  If making pudding, I use lactaid.

I will have to look for that!  Thanks.  I don't even use a bowl, just take a spoon out of the container.  It's weird how long ice cream lasts here. DH is hooked on the Schwans no sugar no fat fudge bars.  We get a box every 2 weeks.  He has at least one a day.  Can't beat the contents and calories!  It's just the body craves the good things- like MILK products!  It's killing me...yogurt used to be my morning staple to get my stomach going nicely- now I can't without issue.  This I think is the biggest suck so far from this surgery.  Even when I was throwing up often it did not bug me...this bugs me LOL!

You might also look for the rice-based ice creams.  I know rice dream (used to use their rice milk all the time and it tastes really, really good) also makes frozen products **** cream, frozen yogurt, etc.) and I think they also have a line of cheeses.

You can also find hemp milk, which I hear is good, but haven't personally had yet.
