what foods to start with?
Tomorrow I start soft solids!! I am so ready and have been craving chili!! So what other foods are good to start with? I was thinking chili, salmon cakes, pulled pork (do you put low calorie bbq sauce on it or no?), some crockpot stews/meals (I would love some recipes!). Also it says I can have lowfat crackers, lowfat mac n cheese, noodles etc. I am not sure that I want to try all those carbs yet- any suggestions?
Thanks!
Liz
Wow, soft foods for you is totally different than my soft food stage.
I hope other will have some suggestions. Did your dietician give you a list of suggestions?
If those tre the type of foods you are allowed, try eggs in various ways, like with cheese, salsa, things like that.
Tuna cakes can be made the same way as salmon cakes if you like tuna. If you like refried beans, trying looking up some recipies for using that.
Otherwise, I am at a loss. My soft foods stage was tuna, eggs, yogurt, soft cooked veggies......nothing too significant. But alot had changed since then.

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!
Well I guess it is really stage 3- I have been on pureed foods for 5 weeks, then at 3 weeks could add eggs, refried beans, and week 4 could add canned meats. In my book there is a two pages of foods I can add at 6 weeks (tomorrow). But I am definetly going to take it slow and not get too carried away!
I had salmon cakes yesterday....yummy...Had a 1/2 for lunch, had to finish the rest for dinner.
I am afraid of chili, won't it give us awful gas.
I wanted to make a lowfat jalepeno recipe, but my Mom talked me out of it, saying my pouch still needs mild food for a bit until healed.
I have had eggs, cream soup w fresh chicken.Fish asparagus, spinach and some lite cheese.
Making ground turkey today, some w taco seasoning some made like a meatloaf, very little panko crumbs.
Peanut butter was the only thing that killed me so far.
Good Luck

Chili was a staple for me early out - no problems with gas from it. I generally ate the Smart Chili (vegetarian chili foudn in the refrigerated produce section at the grocery) with some greek yogurt and it was heavenly.
"mild" foods vs "spicy" foods don't really have any impact on your pouch (unless you had problems with spices pre-surg). In fact, there's a ton of scientific evidence that spicy foods are actually really beneficial for your stomach and digestive system and for healing, because they promote the secretion of a specific type of mucous that's good for the digestive lining. I'd say to try the jalapeno recipe in a small quantity - if it sits well with you, it's fine. (My doc had absolutely no problem with spicy foods early out.)
If peanut butter was a problem, there are 2 likely culprits - the sugar (if you had the type with sugar in it) or the fat. There's a no-sugar-added cashew butter that's really, really good (just cashews and a little safflower oil), and a similar almond butter. Both might be worth a try. You can also look for a lower-sugar peanut butter (like Simply Jif, which is recommended by Barix), or a low-fat peanut butter that's also low sugar (look for an organic one that's just peanuts and a little oil - you can add your own salt to it as needed or a little splenda if you want it sweeter).
I personally LOVE salmon burgers - i now have them over some spring greens (I'm 10 months out) with some spicy sauce and that makes a really good meal!

Thank Karen, I figured it was either the fat or the sugar. I am afraid to try another...lol Guess that cures my PB snacking.
I am going to try my recipe then! Maybe chili for lunch?
Tuna was my favorite food(of course on a 1/3 loaf of Italian bread with hot peppers) so I am holding off til my pouch is more stable to try, don't want to have a bad experiance with it.

peanut butter is the devil.. just sayin' LOL
my problem is that I CAN eat peanut butter and I get carried away. I have not had it in my house for a week and I am going through withdrawal.. :) The fat definitely played a role in my bowels, though. I have had to add softeners to my regiment.
