I saw a post somewhere but I can not find it where someone asked about Protein bars?
I have been looking in the stores at protein bars, and must say I need the idiots guide to buying one.. cause I am soo confused some dont have enough protein , some look like they have too many carbs and calories.. the only reason I want to try and find some is cause I am still not getting in enough protein I thought this might help ..
so please list your favorites...
and help me know what I am looking for..
Thanks JEnn

I don't eat them anymore to much
I know I liked the EAS advantage ones...the low carb ones
There's one in an orange package in convenience/food stores...for the love I can't remember the name of it...but it was pretty good
Online there is the "rock and roll" bar which is covered in peanuts and was decent. But because of fat content I was only allowed half...and this early out...things like the peanuts might be a bit much for you to handle. It was also very chewy, and difficult to get "chewed" properly early out.
Here's what you're looking for:
Sugar gm: If it's over 5gm of sugar per serving AND there is sugar, honey, fructose, molasses, corn syrup etc in the ingredients forget about it.
Protein: I normally aimed for 10-15gm per serving
Fat: Per my guidelines no more than 10 in a serving.
What about protein shakes? The EAS Light shakes (vanilla and strawberry specficially in my opinion) are pretty good.
Or, you could make your own
1 cup Skim milk (I use skim plus because it's 11gm vs 7gm of protein per cup vs "regular" skim milk brands) + frozen fruit + 1 6 ounce container greek yogurt makes one big shake w/ 28gm of protein in it (I added 2-3 packets of splenda to sweeten)
Skim Plus Milk + your fav protein powder:
chocolate protein powder and half a frozen banana for chocolate covered banana
chocolate and a scoop of peanut butter chocolate PB
orange juice diluted with milk and vanilla protein powder for a creamscicle tasting one
Skim milk + one packet of NSA chocolate carnation instant breakfast + one scoop "espresso flavored protein powder" (caffeine free) = chocolate mocha
Skim milk + unflavored protein powder or vanilla protein powder w/ any frozen fruit or just as is
If you want thick shakes use frozen fruit. If not using fruit, add in a few ice cubes in the blender to make it thick. If you want thin shakes, use fresh fruit and/or omit the ice
If you are using protein powder...many ppl say that it must be drank within 1 hour of reconstitution to keep the protein "viable" or "useable" by your body. The nuts I talked to had variations on this opinion.
However...the one with greek yogurt and what not you could make it into two servings w/o losing protein value. The second serving would be thinner, obviously, because the frozen-ness (is that a word?) would disappear

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.

Jenn, you are right. Some bars are loaded with carbs and sugar, others are relativeliy high in fat.
Some are just too many calories for the amount of protein you get.
Some have a relatively low quality protein - not as good as "real" food.
And some taste horrible.
I like the guidelines Pam put out there - I look for only 1-2 gm sugar, which limites the field significantly.
I have to be careful with bars - they "mimic" candy bars for me. And my dr. is not a fan.

Thank you both.. I was never a candy bar eater so that part doesnt worry me, my kids are starting baseball soon.. and I just wanted to have something I could carry if I felt like I was needing more protein ( you know getting weak) I have tried soo many variations of shakes and I just can't get them down I have done with fruit in them, and used skim milk.. tried new ones you guys posted for me .. they just make me feel yucky...
thank you for your help....... I will use your guideline..

The shakes...have you tried soy milk? There are a LOT of people who become somewhat lactose intolerant after surgery.
It seems things like yogurts and cheeses sit ok, but milk itself doesn't. You might want to experiment with that. But, be careful some of the "flavored" soy milks (vanilla etc) have a TON of added sugar

Jenn, Have you tried Protein shots? Walmart has the best I found so far Jess, Dr Currie and Dr Weiger have praised them. Also certain protein bars I keep on hand in case of need: Atkins Day Break they vary in calories, but he have 10g protein, 1g sugar and 2 net carbs, they are the best I found. as far as the protein shots. WalMart carries a brand Body Fortress it has 26g of protein, no sugar 1g carbs in a 2.9fl oz tube flavored as fruit punch. It is not bad I usually take 2 with me to work, have one in the morning and then after my work out have another.
I have also found them on drugstore.com they come in a pack of 6.

I found some of the other brands of protein shots too sweet also, and you may not be far enough out yet I just started them a few weeks ago and had to sample alot unitl I found the one's i like the best some I have a coworker find them and bring them in to me, I would try it and found myself running to the bathroom to barf, so it is trial and error.
I found the same thing looking at the protein powders, and bars my head just started spinning and I walked out of the store frustrated. So I understand, it is a learning process. I found the Atkins bars with Slim fast and diet items again at Walmart and also on drugstore.com

Based on what it sounds like you're looking for, you might try a couple of things... all are good to have in your purse "just in case" or as a boost when you're completely verklempt (like that one, Steffi?) and have no other ideas.
1. Supreme protein bars (come in 4 flavors, range in 12 - 16g protein, relatively low in sugars). They taste excellent, but as someone said, can "mimic" candy bars in case that's a problem for you.
2. Doctor's Carb Control protein bars are low in sugar, high in protein, and also taste good. They are less "candy bar"ish for me. They're not as high in protein as the supreme bars, but are fine.
3. You can also look for "jerky" products that are low in fat. There's a brand (I think it's Ostrim?) that's sold at Barix. They're not bad at all as a quick and easy protein boost, keep well in a purse, and taste OK if you like jerky. You might also look aroudn for other brands - and I hear it's not difficult to make your own (but I never have).
As to other liquid proteins... Muscle Milk Light is great and fits the protein profile nicely. So does Oh Yeah! liquid.
