Exercise advice/opinions/etc
So....now that I"m back on the wagon....I want to make sure I have everything I need to STAY on the wagon.
I went shopping today and bought a new gym bag, new set of headphones, an arm thingy for my iphone etc etc.
I also got a personal trainer to keep me VERY accountable (He wasn't available at Walmart, though, I had to get him @ LA Fitness, lol) Oh, and I'm terrified of him already - don't get me wrong - he's SUPER nice but his biceps are as big as my thighs.....I told him that I am willing to work my ass off, but I would like to be able to walk after leaving on Saturday
What are your favorite apps for exercise etc on the iphone?
Is the Nike thing a couch to 5k only program? I'm not a fan of running, though I am willing to give it another chance. Or can it be used for other applications?
What was the site for work out iPod songs that Mary had posted?
The only class I've EVER done in ANY gym is the spin class. How coordinated does one have to be to do zumba? I'm not exactly graceful nor can I keep a beat very well as Brian reminds me as I tap along on the steering wheel to whatever I'm listening too
Any other classes you like? LA fitness has a bunch. GRanted, most days are limited to the times I can go due to that crazy sleep thing I do during the day/evening but on my days off I would give it a try. I know they have zumba, yoga, cardio kickboxing, and a bunch of other things....
Thanks

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.

YAY you for getting back into the gym!!
Those trainers are intimidating but most are super nice... and NOOOO I'm not just saying that because of my brief stint with Rocco.
I can't help you with the Nike thing or the site that Mary posted, sorry. I only have the couch to 5K thing loaded in my ipod and then just some music that I like.
As far as classes go, I like spin, body pump and pilates. Those are the only ones I've taken so far and I've liked them all. I want to try zumba, but the timing is never right and I'm also scared of the whole coordinated issue like you are. I can see myself tripping over my own feet.
I wish I could do some sort of water class, but there is no pool at Gold's, so that's out.
Good luck finding what is right for you. You will be so much more motivated to go when there is something there you are looking forward to.

Maybe on a weekend we can get together and you can come to LA fitness w/ me on a guest pass - they have a pool :) We can do a water class together. Of course, then you'll be harrassed by them to join most likely....

If you hit the righ****er class, you can have a great workout - but some are taught as "old lady water aerobics" which is not enough cardio. My gym does an aqua kickbox class that really gets the heart pumping. Check out the class and let the instructor know what you are looking for.
I also like jazzercise - it doesn't require a lot of impact or coordination, and the moves are pretty easy to learn. You can put as much into it as you want if you want a killer workout, or take it easy if you are a little sore from your trainer sessions.
Bodypump is not fun to me, but you KNOW you are doing something!
Step aerobics are based on just a couple of moves, but I am still learning this stuff so as not to totally trip over my own feet before the hour is done. BUT....it's a calorie burner to the max!
I've done a little yoga off and on - it's good, but I usually feel as if I "should" be doing cardio.
My gym does not offer Zumba (they subscribe to the Les Mills workouts).
I still take the philosophy that ALL movement is good, so I might as well do the classes that I enjoy. Moving my body IS resistance training!

GREAT for you, Pam!
so here's some answers to your specific questions...
1. I really like Nike+ (nikeplus.com), but it really is designed specifically to measure and analyze running activities. If what you're doing doesn't have that movement, it's not really going to help you.
2. Through Nike+, you can get a variety of itunes "mixes" that incorporate both coaching and good music mixes. When you purchase the mix, you get the individual songs plus the one BIG track that is the songs plus a voice over of the coaching. I like "my first 5k beginner" but they did have a bunch of them.
3. As to zumba, I'm not coordinated AT ALL and I just go and have a good time - the key is that you just keep moving. It's a class that's designed to NOT have a lot of talking through it, so be prepared to be lost for the first several times you go - but if you just go to have a good time and move, you'll be fine. It's the most I smile and laugh durign a good cardio workout ever!
4. As to other classes, my advice would be to try them until you find the one(s) that feel good to you. I really have started liking "interval fight training" ... and cardio kick-boxing. There's also at my gym a "strive" circuit (specific set of equipment)... you can do the circuit on your own, but they also run classes that incorporate the circuit with ab work, cardio, etc. It's a great way to combine the class, cardio, and weights into a concentrated workout. I hear amazing things about pilates but haven't tried it (or yoga) yet.
Hope this helps!

AWESOME info Karen! Thanks so much!
Hmmm...the not talking zumba thing has me a little intimidated...I like it when the instructors are telling you what you're doing next...even in spin....perhaps I will try to schedule myself to be at the gym during a zumba class and watch it?
thanks for the Nike+ info
I'll have to get my nerve up to go into some of the classes....I'm still very self conscious when it comes to taking a class for the first time or so

Pam,
It's not a 'no talking ' thing per se. ..just that there's not as much instruction as in a step class for example because it's dance they tell you to go with the flow.
If you want to, it would be fun if you want to come to one at cornerstone as my guest. .
.. I know it's a hike but could be a blast!
