and I don't know what to do about it.  I went to the orthopedist yesterday and I have to take another 2 months off from running and cannot cross train using the elliptical or the bike.  I start PT tomorrow.  Funny how losing weight and exercising can open a whole new can of worms - - so to speak.  I cried a lot last night but am now focused on strength training, yoga, pilates and PT to get me over this bump in the road.  Thanks for reading.

Beth,
First of all lots of cyberhugs coming your way. I feel your pain. I would be lost without my excercise routine. I love your dedication to getting healthy BUT you have to listen to your body and do what your doctor tells you. Hang in there and please vent away that is why we are here!

BTW what happened to your profile pic?

People comment on my over 100 pound weight loss and attribute it to my WILLpower, but it is my WANTpower: I WANT to be thin and healthy more than anything else!

So sorry Beth, but I am sure if you stick to the PT plan you will be back to running in no time! Keep your chin up!

Beth,

Hugs, first of all.  Try to think of PT (and work with them) as focused personal trainers and make the best lemonade you can from this bag o' lemons.

Between the various physical activities you've mentioned, you're going to stay wonderfully conditioned and active, and if your fear is that you'll "go back" to pre-surg patterns, you won't.  Just use the fear to keep yourself focused and honest.  You've made activity a key part of your life, and this bump in the road isn't going to change that.

you can get past this.. PT is still exercise and you can do upper body, yoga and pilates.  You'll be fine.  You're not going to be going without ANY movement.

running can wait til you're all better.. can't risk any other injuries

Ditto to what everyone else has already said!  Hugs my friend!

Beth, I'm so sorry to hear this!

But as others have said - take advantage of the PT, and let the therapist know that you are motivated to keep your weight loss moving forward. The resistance/strength training can do terrific things, and heaven knows Pilates will strengthen those core muscles!

Sorry to hear that.
There is still a ton of stuff you can do. Don`t focus on what you can`t do get creative. When I owned my gym I had lot`s of people referred by doctors. One was in a body cast, one was 78 year old Teada who had neck surgery and tons of knee injuries and surgeries. Using nautilus or Cybex you can really isolate things and NOT involve the injured area. Cardio you may have to get creative or use the arm bike or really use the circuit. One thing I`ve seen is what I call muscle sympathy. If you can`t work say one leg or arm but still work the other you will seem to get less atrophy in the injured one.
If you don`t mind me asking, what is the injury?

Sure you can ask!  I have Patella Femoral Syndrome and Iliotibial Band Syndrome.  I start PT tomorrow.  I just got done doing yoga.  That actually felt good to stretch and hold poses.  I am sort of intimidated by some of the machines at the gym.  Luckily, my PT is in my gym so I can get some help there too.
