Potatoes
I wondered if I am making a mistake by eating a bit of potatoes (usually baked or mashed - a couple of tablespoons) when we eat out.
My thought has been that a baked potato is not a refined carb - not the kind of simple sugar that you'd find in processed carbs.
At 6 months out, my total food intake is 1/2 to 3/4 cup. Again, this isn't a daily food for me, but the carb thing has me wondering.
What about plain baked yams?
Well I am not sure what the rules say - but as long as you are getting in protein first and meeting your protein goals personally I don't see a problem with it. I see a potato as a "whole" carb if you will. And there are lots of good things in potoatoes vitamin wise.
Now that being said - jus****ch mashed potatoes out - they put a ton of butter and cream in them, better off getting the baked pototao with the "toppings" on the side.

Liz and I agree on a lot of this stuff. So it's no surprise I agree with what she has said.
I'm not completely strict on the carb thing - some people are.
Make sure your protein goals are getting met first, that you are getting adequate fruits and veggies, and then a forkful or two of potatoes or other starch if you have room, once in awhile, won't hurt in my humble opinion!

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.

OK, I am seeing it the same way, and trust your input Liz and Pam!
My baked potatoes are very plain - in fact, I like very simple foods most of the time, so no toppings. Mashed is a rare event, and only a tbsp. then. I do have protein first, then veggies, and eat no rice, pasta, cereals, bread, or other refined carbs.

Lynn,
No big surprise - I agree with Liz and Pam, and also have a tablespoon or so of mashed potatoes on rare occasions.
You asked about yams, though - they're a completely different beast to a white potato. HIgher in a lot of minerals and higher in fiber, lower in carbs, a little higher in natural sugars. Also good for you - as with anything, in moderation. I've seen recommendations that you can eat more yams than you can white potatoes... I generally see them as similar to squashes in my nutrition plan.
