Hi Melissa- thanks, I am sooooo relieved now that it is over!  Do you know where you found the OhYeah protein shake?  Luckily I have been sleeping better, I even was able to roll onto my side for a little, ahh it felt soo much better than sleeping on my back ( I am a side sleeper for sure!)  Yes thankfully the gas pains are pretty much gone!!  That was the worst part!

Liz---Welcome home and welcome to the bench!!! Don't worry about getting all your protein in just yet. It takes time in the beginning. Concentrate on staying hydrated and walking. Don't push the strenuous exercise until your surgeon clears you. I got sick of sweet shakes in the beginning. I found if I put them in the freezer for a while and then ate them with a spoon, I was much happier. I felt like I was having real food. (I was on liquids for 3 weeks after my surgery.) You're doing great!!! Sip sip sip walk walk walk, and rest when you can!!!

I am starting to get in more protein now and keep sipping!  Yes I am starting to get tired of the sweet shakes also, Tuesday I start mushy foods so I will be able to add protein to that.  I am trying to walk as much as I can- I wi**** was warmer out!

Congratulations and welcome to the bench. Glad everything is going so well for you. Just take it easy your body is healing after major surgery. Wishing you continued quick recovery and smooth sailing.

Welcome to the Loser's Bench and congratulations on breezing through your surgery!! Sounds like you have an amazing team behind you - doctors, nurses, family - that's fantastic and will go a long way to helping you on your journey. So glad you're feeling good and not needing those pain meds - just one more thing you don't have to worry about.

Everyone else said it - take it easy - sip lots of water - walk in short spurts but often - and don't fret over the protein intake this early out - quite honestly nothing tasted good to me for the first couple of weeks - it was all I could do to gag protein shakes down - but your tastes will return so don't overload on specific shakes of any kind because chances are you'll hate them in another month or two.

Wishing you all the best and much success - you're off to a great start!!

Liz,

Congratulations and welcome to the loser's bench!!!

You might want to try a sample pack of protein ...  netrition has one that's 14 single-serving samples of a bunch of different ones:
http://www26.netrition.com/netrition_protein_sampler_pack.html

I personally like Matrix (by syntrax) and have heard wonderful things about MAX protein from certain GNC stores.  I also like Oh Yeah and Muscle Milk Light pre-mixed protein drinks.

Your tastes, especially in the first 2 weeks post-surg, will be "off" - courtesy of the after-effects of anesthesia (say goodby to short-term memory in that timeframe too!) and the onset of ketosis as your body's metabolism resets itself.  It's not unusual to have a bad taste in your mouth, too.

So if you don't like something today, put it aside and try it again in a couple of weeks.

You can also mix your protein powders in all kinds of interesting ways - with PB2 dehydrated peanut butter (Yum! - reeses PB cup when mixed with choc protein, skim milk, and ice cubes!) and with frozen strawberries or other fruits.  You can add davinci SF syrup to protein powder, milk, and ice cubes and blend it up for a "shake" in a wide variety of flavors.  Just experiment and see what you like!

And don't forget greek yogurt (plain, not flavored) to add a huge fat-free protein boost to soups and as the basis for other blends.  Use it like you would sour cream, or sweeten it with splenda or whatever and mix with sugar-free fruit jam or jelly for a sweeter flavored yogurt.
