Pink Eye and UTI's

So I'm pretty sure I have pink eye in both of my eyes and have developed a pretty bad UTI.  I've never had either and I'm not really sure.  I feel like there is a 20 pound weight sitting on my bladder that makes me feel like I have to go constantly - and then nothing happens when I do.  Yesterday was the first day I hit my fluid goals since starting pureeds a week ago.  I've been coming close the other days, but was just too full to get it all in.  Do you think it could be from the lack of water?  Did anyone else have this happen after surgery?  (I'm 3.5 weeks out).

Pink eye came out of nowhere.  Last night about 9pm, my eyes just started burning and itching like crazy.  Then when I rubbed them it kind of looked like the goop in them was snot consistency (gross, I know).  And when I woke up this morning, my eyes were pretty much sealed shut with dried goop. Does this sound like Pink Eye to all of you?

I have an appointment with the doc at 2pm today - but I'm worried that because I can't drink fruit juice or take pills, there won't be any relief for the UTI.  Any suggestions on how to treat that this soon after surgery?

As always... thanks for the suggestions, thoughts and help!

Melissa.. sounds like you definitely have pink eye.

Don't know about the UTI because I've never had one.

Glad you were able to get into the doctor so soon.  Hope you start to feel better.  Your eyes will get better after a day or two of the meds.

The meds for pink eye are just drops, right?

usually just drops.. sometimes antibiotics, but I'm sure there is something you'll be able to take.  Your PMD knows you had the surgery, right? If so, they should be able to find something.

Yep, it sounds like pink eye. I've had it pop up twice - always thought it was a childhood disease! And yes, they just give you drops for it.

As for the UTI, I've had plenty of experience with that! Drinking lots of fluids is definitely a must, and water will fill the bill just fine. If they give you a scrip, ask for somethign in a capsule so you can dump it into some SF jello pudding or a little yogurt and take it that way. (Used to be that macrodantin was a capsule and very effective for UTI's). You will have to give a urine sample, so be prepared for that.

Sounds like you got a little run down and the bacteria just attacked your body!

While on the topic, here is my 3 step plan for avoiding UTI's - it's worked since my 20's when I had a UTI every 6 weeks for a year, and ended up being treated at University of Michigan Hospital:

1. Drink lots of water.
2. Use the bathroom at least every couple of hours. Women tend to wait much too long. We learn as little girls to "hold it." Boys just go on the nearest tree.
3. Use the bathroom before sex and as soon as possible after.

I had a terrible UTI one week after my RNY, so I can sympathize!  They gave me liquid Bactrim first but it didn't work and I got sicker -- I'm not saying that to scare you, but don't do what I did -- if you're not getting better, CALL!  I was then given Levaquin 750, which I had to chew. It was totally nasty but it killed the UTI and I was better quickly.

As for relief, juice is definitely off limits, but at CVS I bought those "urinary relief tablets" -- I think it was the CVS version of Uristat pills.  They will turn your urine all sorts of interesting colors from the iodine, but they definitely helped me.  And again, I had to chew those.  Very nasty, but necessary.

Good luck with it. I hope you feel better soon!

Hope you feel better very soon. Just make sure your doc knows all your restrictions. Maybe a liquid antibiotic just like they would give to children would be the easiest right now. Good luck

How awful... Melissa.  You are getting everything thrown at you all at once.  Get those antibiotics into you fast.  UTIs are the worst... hope you are feeling better soon!  ~Liz~
