I'm a mess

Sorry, I just need to vent.  My daughter is supportive, but I am not allowed to complain, as she insists this was self inflicted.  I am having trouble with everything, from getting enough fluids, protein, to exercise.  Drinking water is difficult, more times than not it hurts.  I can not stand any of the artificial sweeteners.  The only thing that I have found that I like is Minute Maid Light Lemonade.  I am leary of drinking to much of that as I am afraid of ulcers.  The ketosis is miserable, everything looks good or sounds good til I get it then one or two bites and it all tastes like saw dust.  I haven't found a protein shake that I like.  I got by in the beginning, but it is bad now.  I am really thankful that I had this done, and I am trying to plow through this, but I am just so frustrated  all I want to do is cry.  I have lost more than I have posted on here, as I know what my scale says, but only update my loses when I go to the doctors and use their scale.  The next thing is that I am losing so fast, I worry that I will lose to much. (never thought I would say that)  The support from the home front is not there.  My husband has yet to say anything about my 40lb loss.  He did not want me to have this done, so I guess I am not surprised.  Thanks for listening to my rant.

I won't lie to you - the beginning isn't a walk in the park. THere are tough times and a lot of adjustment for everyone involved. This is the time for you to be selfish and take care of you. Maybe you need to cut back a bit on watching the grandkids and focus on yourself and healing. As well as learning the plan for your new body. YOu are going to loose very quickly at first and it will taper off, you'll be fine. Eventually it is going to stop and you'll wish you were loosing "too fast" again! lol I know I do!

Keep trying proteins - I only liked 2 early out - Necar fuzzy navel and Nectar cappuccino. Try the chocolate MAX protein from GNC, I liked that one later out when I found it but only certain GNC's carry it. Also GNC will let you return an opened container if you don't like it if you have your receipt.

KEep trying things - drink broth - make soups creamy by adding greek yogurt. Eat Greek yogurt. Try different artifical sweeteners - your tastes change DRASTICALLY post op and you very well might tolerate them now.

For me, pain while drinking usually occured when I try to gulp/guzzle. Try going back to taking small sips - that may help.

Try to work on your protein by adding in a variety of things.  Are you trying things like chili, egg salad, tuna salad, etc.   How about greek yogurt flavored with sugar free pudding mix?  I swear that it tastes like cheesecake to me.

As for your husband and your daughter.......  grrrr.......  I'm sorry that you don't have their complete support.  If you don't get the support you need from your family, you will just have to be your own cheerleader !

You took a huge step to be healthy and these little obstacles that you are experiencing WILL get better soon.

Hugs,
Lisa

Seems to me like your daughter and husband are afraid of losing the 'comfortable' you - maybe the one they could take advantage of?? And since when is your daughter allowed to tell you what you can and cannot do? If you want to complain, complain - if she doesn't want to listen she can leave the room.

I found after my surgery I could not tolerate cold drinks of any kind - everything had to be room temperature for the first few months, and sips only - everything else hurt. And your tastes do change drastically after the surgery - but a lot of that will eventually return. I can now drin**** drinks (and rarely drink anything hot - I even drin****d coffee now). I drink protein shakes again - same ones I could drink before - sometimes those really are just a matter of personal taste.

This is YOUR time - this is YOUR body - this is YOUR life and YOUR health and you have to take care of YOU to ensure a safe, healthy journey through your weight loss. And maybe you need to sit them both down and tell them that, and that you would love their support but even if you don't get it you are going to become a happier, healthier person and you'd like them to be part of it.

Take care of yourself and don't let them get you down - we're all out here for  you - I know we're not the same as in person or family, but  you can vent anytime and look for support - we'll always listen and always offer as much support as we can.

Kathy

Kathy said exactly what I was thinking!!!

Focus on WHY you took this dramatic step and on your goals (your little day-to-day goals, as well as the bigger goals).  Make your "to do" list of things you never could do before surgery but always wanted to...  and review it and check things off as you accomplish them (hint - make sure you DO them!!!  With friends if your family isn't supportive).

Tell your daughter in no uncertain terms that she has two choices on this topic:  support or silence.  And stick to it.  If she can't provide support, and she has every right NOT to, then she needs to just stay out of your way as you get it elsewhere.  And you can always vent here and to your support groups and friends.

I'm not following why there's a connection between minute maid light and ulcers, though... it's SO critical right now that you get your fluids in that you can't be all that picky about it.  You can try water with a little squeeze of lemon (and if you really need it sweet, toss in a tiny bit of splenda or stevia), or water that has sat in the fridge overnight with sliced cucumbers in it (If you like cucumbers).  There's an Acai Energy powder you can add to your water that's really tasty - and Tea2Go has some wonderful decaf flavors.

You've got to work on getting your body past the ketosis, which water and upping your food intake will do.  As you start to have a little more carbs and start hitting your protein and liquid goals, things will get better in the taste department.  Go back and try things again that you didn't like a few weeks ago - you may find that your tastes have changed for that item.

Some other things to look at - Muscle Milk Light (lactose free, high protein, low sugar), MAX protein from GNC, order sample packs from netrition of different proteins.  And what are you doing with the protein shakes?  mixing them with water?

Try mixing them with skim milk, adding in some frozen fruit (strawberries, banana, etc.) and blending to make a thick shake.... or adding in some PB2 and some ice cubes to a choc protein (Yum!).  I've made some really good shakes by adding in frozen berries, pineapple, unsweetened coconut, nuts, etc. and blending really well.  You can get all kinds of creative with them!  Jus****ch that you're using only unsweetened frozen fruit and that you're not using TOO much fruit (typical for me is .5 cup nonfat milk, 1 scoop protein powder, 1/2 frozen banana, 5 frozen strawberries).

Hang in there and day by day it WILL get easier.  You're at one of the low points, and your body is releasing hormones (estrogen) that it's stored in fat, so your mood will reflect that.  Just recognize that it's a chemical thing and that you'll get through it.

HUGS!!!

Karen

Glad that you are venting. Sometimes just getting it all off your chest makes you feel much better. I went through something similar during the first several months.  I agree about the temperature of the drink. At first I had to sip very slowly and it had to be room temp. Now I am back to normal for the most part but there are still times when something ice cold will bother me some. And everrthing I tried to eat early out tasted awful. My doc told me that some people go through this. It just takes awhile longer for their bodies to adjust. He told me that the longest he ever had a patient go through it was about six months. I think mine lasted about five months. So hang in there. Something else that might help is to buy sample sizes of the protein powders so that you are not investing alot of money for something that you can't use. vitalady.com sells many different protein powder samples. Good luck. My motto is "Slow and steady wins the race" Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and before you know it you will be feeling much better.
